Oil filters
Not sure if anyone has any ideas about this but here goes. My friend has some 10+ year old AC oil filters that he found while cleaning his garage. They are for his two 93 vettes. Another of his friends told him not to use them because they will have broken down internally. Any thoughts?

Hmmmm.....that's actually an interesting question. Old AC filters may have actually been better built that today's versions. My concern would be the pleated paper element. If the filters have been stored in a dry, warm location I would think the paper is fine. But, if the filters were stored out in the "back shed" where they were frozen and thawed hundreds of times over the last 10 plus years, it's hard to say how much condensation has set in and wet the paper element, caused internal rust, etc. Wet paper tends to break down and fall apart after multiple wet/dry cycles. Not worth the chance in my opinion since new filters of equivalent quality are under $5.00 at Wally World.
If this is a performance application, I would highly recommend the top of the line Napa, Amsoil or Fram (yes Fram) filters. These use the newest nano fibers (or whatever they call them) that filter better than paper or gauze yet flow better to keep oil pressure up during extreme conditions.
Cheers

Not sure if innards broke down...paper/ rubber...over time.
My concern would be rust.
Perhaps you could cut one open and inspect for piece of mind.
They are somewhat inexpensive parts, I don't think I would use them.

So tight your **** squeaks
Filters are cheap, why take a chance on clogging up the oil galleries with filter media that has broken down. Not worth it in my opinion. Stop being so cheap!!!

The filtering media in the AC Delco filters when new is prone to tearing, so it would probably be even worse on a 10 year old filter. Avoid them.

I wouldn't take the chance with such a cheap part, go buy some Mobil 1 filters if you want to use a quality filter on those Vettes

Thanks for all the replies. By the way I’m not the cheap guy. My friend found them in his garage. But that is ok, I’ve been called a lot worse!

I would have to cut one in half just to check it out and see what kind of condition it is in. Would be interesting and help you decide.
