7 rounds at Super Chevy...
A little late, but here is my recap of the Super Chevy Show at Maple Grove Raceway last weekend.
First and foremost. This thread would not even be here if not for the generosity of Anthony Cupolo. Long story, but, I left home without enough fuel for the event. Anthony had an extra 5 gallons that he let me have for the event.
Thank you Anthony!!
I've been to this event as a spectator before, but never a racer. It's a pretty big deal, as people come from all over the northeast to race and show their cars and trucks.
I entered Pro and Street/DOT and time shots Friday and Saturday morning. Round 1 Saturday afternoon.
I felt good with my spot on the tree during time shots with a .007 and a .034. I also had a red light and my 60' was way off as I rolled in too deep.
First round in Pro, I get a beautiful 1st gen Camaro dialed 12.16. I dialed 10.35. We both leave green and as we get to the MPH box I've caught him. I lift for the win. Seems his car slowed up and didn't run the number, as I ran a 10.40@ 122. Turns out we had identical .015 reaction times.
First round in Street/DOT, I think it was a 3rd gen Camaro. I dialed 10.34 as my magic box said I'd run 10.32. My opponent is dialed 11.58. We both leave green, but I'm not feeling confident in my light. I'm just barely gonna catch him, or not, so I'd like to say I let him take the stripe. It was close and I scrubbed a little ET and MPH.
I was right about my light, as I had a .072. But, he had a .078 and broke out, as I ran dead on with a 4.
Sunday Morning! the big day.
Round 2 of Pro. I'm out warming up my car and they call us to the lanes. Well I'm right at the entrance, so I roll in and am first in line. I know better, but what am I gonna do at this point?
Sure enough, I spun, he won. I was .013, he was .080. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda... I'm done in the Pro class.
Round 2 in Street/DOT. My box says I'll run a 10.34, so I dial 10.36. (In case you haven't noticed, I like to hold a little) My opponent leaves too early, and I run it out to a 10.339. The box is smarter than I am.
Round 3 in Street I pull a really cool 40's coupe with a Big Block (because anything else would be uncivilized). I lost the slip for this pass, But according to a text I sent, I treed him and let him go for the break out.
Round 4. 9 cars left. I get a sinister black 1st gen Camaro. 4-link/back-half/big tire car. It looks like it's gonna run a 8 second pass while standing still. I had just beaten his buddy the round before. I dial 10.38 as its getting a lot stickier. DA is over 4000' now. To my surprise, he writes 10.36 on his window. After talking to him later, he had bought the car and threw a 383 SBC in it to go race.
As I finished my burnout, he already had one light on. The clocks hadn't even cleared from the previous round. I just sat there, channeling my mentor, Edgar. Finally the clocks clear, and I see my dial is correct. He is fully staged now. I'm still sitting there. Finally the starter motions for me to stage. So I roll in deep with one move.
I felt like I had killed the tree, and I was in front the whole pass. Too far in front, so a couple whomps and a lift, and my win light comes on.
I'm .011/10.471@121
he's.113/10.449@130
Round 5 - 5 cars. I figure I've likely got the bye with my .011 light, but, no... another guy had a .002.
So I get an 80s Malibu dialed 11.87. I dialed 10.40. We're both green. Another one of my misteps on the light with a .089, but his was a .126. I whomp to a 10.412 for the win.
Round 6 - 3 cars. I get the bye with my stellar .089, but both other drivers had gotten a bye. So, I took a pass. Missed the tree. Nothing much else to say about it...
Round 7 - the Finals. It's been a long, hot, sticky day. All the racers I met were cool and fun to talk with. They were really enjoying the day, win or lose.
My opponent was a young guy with an 80s Malibu. (this race was Malibu central)
He was dialed 12.20 to my 10.48.
I was -.015, he was .035. Could have been a good race, but, according to my 60', I rolled in too deep.
All in all, it was a fun event. The car show area was packed with some amazing custom rides. Maple Grove has a really nice facility. If my schedule allows, I'll go back next year.

Great job Pete See...bracket racing isn't so bad is it
It's been a very uneventful racing season so far Gary. Other than running my buddy James in the final of Atco's doorslammer race, there's been no real highlights.
Although that may change since my plan is to run the Thunderbird in my first NHRA Divisional this weekend. May need to dust off the writing stick after that one.

Thanks guys!
Have fun in the heat, Dan. Our track temp was 122, and the air was 96 degrees on Sunday, so not far off from your conditions down south.

Nice write up.
I get to Maple Grove maybe twice a year and race trophy class with the novices. If I go to Super Chevy next year, I'll look for your car.
