Default What cam in 383/TPI?

What cam specs would work well for a daily driver 383 using stock 85 TPI (until I get LPE intake/base)? I would be using 24 lb injectors, no NOS or supercharger. Thanks.

i'm running the Isky p/n 201265/272 217/225 .485/.505 112 LSA roller cam in my 383. i think it's a bit mild, but with long tube TPI runners and full emissions i ran 12.1 1/4 and 8.01 1/8ths. dyno'd something like 340 RWHP, 420RWTQ. i drive it to work every day and autocross or drag race when i can! 1.6 rockers would be nice... it would actually come clost to a 219 with 1.5's in the lift dept. then. and it was a few less $$s, but i ended up with it because the engine builder is partial to isky, he ostly builds circle track motors.

In Lingenfelter's book, he talks about a 440 horse 383 and 480 lbs-ft torque. With a .503/.525 with 219 degrees duration and 112 degree lobe separation. (hydraulic roller) Says it will idle at 750 rpm. This is with ported and polished L-98 Vette heads, the AFR's should do better. (This is with the super ram)

i'd vote for the LPE 219 or 211 (if you are staying with the stock tpi. I almost can'tr believe how well these cams work. they idle fine and make power where you need it. I think the secret is that they are very fast ramps (check the duration against lift and see if you can find a more agressive cam?).

This is the same question that I have been pondering on a 383 that I'm planning. My major question is, which of the more popular cams are more suitable for constant roadcourse use, and would allow the valvetrain to live a long happy life? I keep hearing great things the ZZ9 and the 74219 cams, but also about the aggressive ramps on the 74219. While you can't seem to argue with the power that these type cams make, is there one that would be better than another for a roadrace environment?

The ZZ409 from TPIS is another good cam to look at. Similar to the LPE219 but a little more aggressive at 226/226. Lift similar. Had the ZZ9 in my 350 and the ZZ409 in the 396. Idles great. Track numbers to follow.

I saw where you are undecided on running headers or not. That comes into play when selecting a cam.
What compression will this motor be and what is the gear ratio?Do you have a hydraulic roller block?

mountainmotor makes some good points. The '85 motor has iron heads and hydraulic flat tappets. Most of the cams suggested are hydraulic roller, high lift cams. You'll need to use aftermarket hydraulic roller lifters to use them in your existing block. The stock iron heads don't provide good flow at higher lifts. Is there money in the budget for aftermarket iron or Al heads? If not, then high lift isn't going to payoff as much. Which crate motors are you looking at? Short block, long block, or complete engine? What's your budget? Do you plan on making modifications in stages over time? All these considerations can affect your decisions. This is more than you asked about, but you'll get better answers if you can provide more information.
