Default What do you think of this zz4?? 506HP!!

A buddy of mine sent me this link.... its combo #102 on the page
http://www.ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos14.html
Here is the info copied over...
Displacement: 350 cu. in.
Carburetor: Demon 850
Heads: Air Flow Research 195, with 2.02/1.60 in. valves
Intake: Edelbrock Victor Jr.
Camshaft: Comp Cams hydraulic roller, with 0.562/0.580 in. of lift and 248/254° of duration @ 0.050 in. of lift.
Exhaust: Hooker 1 3/4 in. headers and 2 1/2 in. Flowmaster mufflers
Pistons: GM high-silicon aluminum
Rods: GM
Crank: GM forged
Ignition: MSD 6AL
Comp. Ratio: 10:1

MAX HP: 506 @ 6500
MAX Torque: 436 @ 5500

Combo 102 is a GM ZZ4 350 cu. in. engine with AFR 195 heads and a Comp Cams hydraulic roller cam. With an 850 carb and 1 3/4 in. headers, this engine produces 506 HP and 436 ft-lbs of torque. This engine shows what that adequate induction and exhaust systems are imperative for more power. 3 in. mufflers could have helped a bit, though.
What i was wondering was , does the stock zz4 have GM high-silicon aluminum pistons?? Other than that the only thing that looks different are the cam, carb, intake and heads.
Can the zz4 handle the 6500 RPMs though??

A friend with an 88 IROC with a ZZ4 shifts his at 6500 every time. The crank is forged, but the pistons are hyperutectic's I think.

What do you think of this zz4?? IMO who ever dreamed it up has a real lack of engineering skills. They put in a cam that puts out max hp right on the verge of valve float rpm. Solid roller would have been the correct choice with those duration numbers in 350 ci and a high 7000 rpm red line. It also is way into the "Offroad only catagory"

What are hyperutectic pistons anyway?? im not too familiar with the types of pistons besides the typical falt top pistons vs. forged.

Makes sense Lt1er, but it says at the bottom of the page that it was an article out of Chevy High Performance Magazine, September 2001, p. 23-30
Dont get all hot in the collar cause i definitely agree about the solid roller cam!
Do you think they make a cam very similiar to this in solid roller??

I think the idea was to "bolt" an engine together using new "off the shelf" parts that the average joe can work with and make some real power.

I thought it was pretty impressive for a factory crate engine to be that capable.

Taken with a grain of salt, magazines provide some of the best experiments...

Considering that most all of the power influencing components have been replaced, I don't know that calling it a ZZ4 is still accurate. The results would have been the same if they'd started with any 350 short block with similar compression ratio. The recommended rev limit of the ZZ4 has more to do with the limits of the valve train than with anything else so, as long as the replacements pieces are up to the job, the higher rpm probably wouldn't be a problem. I'm not so sure I'd want peak torque at 5500 rpm in a street engine though and to make use of a 6500 power peak would require shift points above 6500.

I guess I should have used the terminology "crate engine short block". It was a factory ZZ4 shortblock which can be had for less than 2000 bucks.

No Go, no correction needed on your part! I wasn't referring to your post in particular, I just wanted to point out that the same engine could have been built without investing in a complete ZZ4 and then replacing most of it. As you mentioned, the short block would be much more logical and cost effective place to start. I've been around many Z4 equipped cars (and have driven some of them) and it's one sweet engine right out of the crate. My main purpose in posting was to possibly save an inexperienced person from thinking that they should pay for a complete engine and then replace most of it's components. I personally know people that have done exactly that so I'm kinda sensitive to about the issue.

I think they have a dyno on steriods. That much power from engine like that time to throw the flag :bs :U

It's advertised as having high silicone pistons... I've also been told that it will handle much higher RPMs than rated.
