If I replace the stock heads on my 85 with world sportsman 2's will I see an Improvement? The motor is basically stock, the only thing I have done is ported the stock intake(plenum, runners, and lower intake). I have a chance to buy these heads from a friend for a great price. The springs are a little stiff though, supposed to handle up to a 560 lift. Thoughts?
You won't see much gain. Your intake work will show the most result. A cam would help, too. Think of Sportsman II's as a stock replacement head. They might give a slight gain but not much unless you work them over. If you're serious about working them over... maybe you should consider a better flowing head in the first place. All in all it's not a bad head. Just limited in it's potential.
I dunno, you probably have very low comp heads now (76cc) and if the Sportsman II's are 64cc you WILL see a difference. These heads are rated at 200cfm and are way better than stockers. To benefit fully though you need to match your system with HiPo components.
OK, I think the cc is 73 or 76 on these heads. so my compression will stay the same. But the runner size is larger (200cc) as apposed to the stock size, which I don't know. They are the same price as a set of new vortechs, ($500) so I am not sure whether to buy the sportsmans or the vortechs. whatever heads I buy they will probably be the same heads I will use on the 400 I will be building later. I'm about to order headers now, just wanted to see if making a head purchase now would be a good move or just wait a little while, as I will keep the stock motor in while I finish the paint and interior this year. Thanks!
I have the Sportsman II's... but they are not on the car yet. Mine are 72cc angle plug. They are also avail in 64cc straight and angle plug. They are quite a bit better than stock iron heads. I plan on putting my stock TPI on first and getting dyno numbers with the heads and a better cam. Then I will be going with the LT1 intake retro. I already have the intake... just need to put together the fuel system.
The use of Vortecs will require a raised runner intake manifold. If you drill and tap the heads to use with your existing non-raised runner design, you will have terrible port-matched components.
Vortecs + base = a combination that is good cost wise, but leaves no room for manifold swapping if you are going to be staying with EFI. http://www.sdpc2000.com seems to have the lowest price so far on the Vortec TPI base.
Not sure the LT1 intake will work with Vortech heads... as in I'm not sure the bolt pattern is the same. You still have to modify for coolant and distributor though... :)
