Default What Dart and Edelbrock said about my intake manifold selection

I talked to Dart and Edelbrock tech to get their input on my selection. I am looking at the Victor Jr (I have one) the Dart (Don't have) and the Performer RPM Air Gap (Have one of these also) Just for a refresher the motor combo is:

454 + .030
Edelbrock Ovals ported to flow 330 ish at .652 Stock is 280 to 295. depending on who you believe
Bumping comression to 10.75 or a little more (heads milled)
Holley 850 flowed to 930
Solid roller 255 / 262 at .050 and .652 lift.
6 spd
4.40 final drive in 4th

I told both companies I did not want to rev the motor past 6800

Dart said they thought their intake was a little big for my motor and reccomended I stay with the Air Gap. I was a little suprised by this.

Edelbrock said they would reccomend the Victor Jr. for cams bigger than 250 at .050 and said the Victor Jr, would probably start making more power at around 3000 rpms over the Air Gap. They also said they consider the 600 hp mark the cut off betwen the two intakes.

I have not decided yet which I will use. I have some more people to talk to. I take the opinions of some the of guys here very seriuosly (Hotrod, 542C2, MM, and others)

I am leaning towards going with the Victor Jr. Comparred to the last motor I would like the new motor to start making more power at around 3000-3500 and then substancially more by 5000 and up then 50rwhp more to 6500-6800.

I thought some of you might find this interesting.

Dart is pure racing stuff for extreme high RPM`s. I use the Dart 325`s 2.30 intake and 2.0 exhaust on a new crate LS7. The best manifold I found is an L 88 because its not an air gap. A 850 carb is correct for mine. The reason I didn`t want the Dart intake is its lack of heat for the fuel. Reasons, I also drive the car on the street with aviation gas and I`m not always at full power which The Dart Intake would require. The L88`s intake also has a open plenum, tall dual plain style the same as Darts. Stock 12.5 compression, 620/580 cam {stock} and stock valve train [no roller rockers] Roller rockers are good for racing, but require too much maintance for the street. {prone to fall apart and little needles in the oil pan are bad news.} Hooker comp headers, turbo 400, 4.56 axle, 3500 stall converter, Walker 3 in racing mufflers and 3 in exhaust coming out in front of the wheels helping to blow the dirt off the tires. I drove it to and from Detroit Dragway until it closed a couple of years ago. This combination ran low 11`s at 120 +. Edelbrock is more street orientated than Dart and I`m sure they would not steer you wrong. I forgot to mention the car is a 1968 SS 396 Camaro coupe with the LS7 transplant. I can make it go faster, but I still want to drive it on the street with out racing engine maintance. Leaning in over fenders and scratching paint jobs is not my cup of tea! If you get any where close to this setup, you can go fast and still drive um. Good luck,  :flag PS if you need a set of new LS7 Heads I got um.

Irregardless of what the guy at Dart said, I would still get their manifold. If you are a little scared (and you shouldn't be) then the Victor Jr. would be a good choice as well.

Do you remember the name of the guy you talked to at Dart? I have a friend that is real tight with Dick Maskin (the owner of Dart) and most all of the guys there. I would like him to find out where this guy is coming from.

Do you think Maskin would want to donate an intake :chevy

542C2, Hotrod and ML67 are all in favor of the Dart Hmmmmm, I appreciate all the other advise, but I should give the Dart a try. I have seen these guys be right to often.

You need square port heads and more compression to make the Darts work. But you can buy a oval style from them but it`s smaller. All so, they have two less bolts per side to hold them down. It will still work however. For some accurate information to help you, call Dart and ask for George Delorian. Tell him that I refered you.
