Hey all does anyone know of a brand of a rust converter that turns the metal GRAY not black?

I had one but have since run out and cannot find it anywhere. There are many that are paints, but I want one that just converts it to grey without a pigment.

Anyone? My search has not found one. Thanks, Ike.

1972 Corvette C3 Odometer Slipping Between Drive Gear and First Number Wheel

I�m currently rebuilding the speedometer/odometer on my 1972 Corvette C3 because the mileage counter stopped working.

After completely disassembling the speedometer, I found that the original nylon drive gear had already been replaced with a metal gear by a previous owner, but the second gear had not been replaced yet. I�ve already ordered that gear and plan to install it.

While taking everything apart, I removed the complete odometer number assembly to get better access to the gears. During inspection, I noticed something strange:

The small drive gear on the shaft appears to be firmly fixed to the shaft itself, but it does not seem to have a solid mechanical connection to the first number wheel/gear of the odometer assembly. Because of that, the drive gear mostly slips and spins without transferring enough torque to reliably rotate the number wheels � especially when the mileage gets higher and the load increases.

Has anyone seen this before?

Is that connection supposed to be:
- press-fitted,
- friction-fitted,
- or bonded/glued from the factory?

Would it make sense to carefully glue the connection (for example with Loctite), or is some amount of slip intentional in the design?

Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated.

1968 327 gasket set

I'm restoring a 1968 Tonawanda 327 and would like the gaskets to look correct. Should I only search for NOS gaskets or can I get away with aftermarket gaskets?
I'm thinking that the only ones which physically must look correct are the front and rear intake manifold rubber seals.
Looking for opinions, thanks in advance Frank.

Need help on an electrical problem 71 Vette

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying their rides. I have a 1971 with a 350 and a Tremec TKX 5 speed. I have replaced one of the engine wiring harnesses and the rear wiring harness. I am still running a coil witht he original distributor and added a pertronix. Other than that most of the wiring is original. I have a developed a problem a fuse shorting.

When I put the key in and turn it - first click /acc - no problem, second click /ign - the fuse for the turn signals and the back up lights blows. I thought it might be the turn signal relay because historically the horn would intermittently go off and then - last week - subsequently my turn signals stopped working leaving only my hazard lights operational- so I replaced the turn signal harness in the column. Problem not fixed. So I started checking rear light bulbs (LED) and problem persists after I removed them all. So I thought its the back up light harness - maybe it melted. Checked it and from the underside of the transmission tunnel to the TKX connection - wiring is fine. So...I thought maybe I compromised one of the wires in the new harness...so I disconnected it and tried again.

Now - still in the same spot. When I turn the key and and hit the ignition point - the 20A fuse for the turn signals / back up lights immediately pops. Has anyone elese had this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Fuel pump Torque Specs?

Hello. My question is about the torque specs. on the two 1/4" bolts that help to hold on the fuel pump plate on a s.b.69. The AIM says 32 to 40 lbs. I got thinking about it , seems high for a 1/4" bolt and wondered if there had been a revision to that number. Should I try/ risk that or just tighten it and simple check a few times for leaks. Thanks in advance for advice.

Unusual wiper issue?

The other day I had the Corvette out and I decided to see if the wiper door and wipers worked properly. I have not driven the car in the rain since I bought the car a year and a half ago. So I turned the wipers on,and the door operated properly,but the wipers did not work on either speed. I reached under the door and just touched the wiper arm with my finger tip and they came on and worked fine in both speeds. I shut the wipers off and tried them again,the door lifted properly,but the wipers didn't come on again,but once I just touched the wiper arm with my finger tip they started working fine. I tried this ten more times,and the same thing happened! I am at a loss? Any ideas why this is happening?

Steering column to dash spacing tolerance

Installing the steering column after putting body back on frame. Entire dash is in as well as the console except for some of the console controls. Slid the column in place and the steering box coupling (rag joint) went together fine with correct spacing although I haven't torqued yet. I am following the installation procedure specified in the AIM (UPC 9 Sheet A5) for 1972 convertible. The assembling drawing is below for reference. Bottom line is the steering column is right up against the dash and I still have another 1/8 inch of space between the support (item 8) and the batwing of the column. The support is pulled all the way to the rear (lowest attachment). The spec says .03 inch spacing between the 2 (column and radius of the dash). There is no way I will force it up any higher against the dash. I can't figure out where any further adjustment may be. The bracket (item 3) had no adjustment to it and everything else in the dash and console went together pretty well. The only adjustment is the support and it is pulled all the way back. All bolts are in and snug/loose with the 1/8 inch gap yet to tighten between the column and support and the steering operates smoothly (wheels on skates). Unless someone has an idea what I may have done wrong I will just use a spacer and longer bolts but I would rather not. I have to be missing something I think. Maybe someone has had the same problem or knows what I might be missing. Thanks for any thoughts.
