I currently own 2 f-bodies and a C4. The C4 will be traded in on a new Camaro once they become available. I like my Corvette, but I'm an f-body guy at heart. It's hard to explain. My Corvette basically does everything that my f-bodies do, but does it better, yet I don't like the car as much.
Even though the Corvette does everything better, the camaro can do it cheaper, which leaves plenty of mod money.

We currently have 4 Camaros so you can guess my opinion of them.
Right now we have a 71 RS Z/28, an 87 IROC-Z (with 350), an 89 RS Convertible, and a 95 Z/28.
I've never considered it a rivalry between the Camaro and the Corvette, I have always viewed them a car that complement each other. Both cars have a place.
As for the 5th Gen Camaro not doing well. I strongly disagree. The response has been overwhelming for the car.

T-Tops made their debut in 78 with along with the last redisgn of the front and rear bumpers for the 2nd gen.
Z/28 was not available for 75 & 76. It returned with 77.
The was not available between 1982 and 1986. Chevrolet did put a 350 in 50 Camaros in 86 for testing but they were not sold to the public. The 350 returned in 87 and was essentially the same as the Corvette engine, but it had iron heads and exhaust manifolds.
OK, I went a little overboard there,
BTW, I am currently the webmaster for the Pacific Northwest Camaro Club, so, as you can probably tell, I am a big F-Body nut as well as being a Corvette fan.

The chin spoiler was always an option on third gen Camaros.

I have always loved Camaros, except for the 3rd generation. Most recently had a 30th Anniversary model and loved it. The Camaro got even better in 98 when GM went to the LS1. 4th Generation V8 Camaros and Firebirds were absolutely the best high performance value in history.
Then.......GM forgot to put R&D $$ into the program and by 02 the 4th Gen Car had run its course. We were told that the high performance coupe market was dwindling. GM was gonna put its $$ into exciting new platforms, such as SSR and HHR. Sheesh, what a load of crap from a bunch of idiots. Worst decision GM ever made was to discontinue the F Body.
Then..........uh-oh, Ford cleans GM's clock by selling ALL 192,00 plus Mustangs w the redesigned 05 model. At least GM has come to their senses and revived the Camaro.
IMO there will be increased interest in 4th Gen Camaros as the new Camaro enters the scene in 09. Camaro will rightfully reclaim its crown as the Bang For The Buck King.
Camaros and Firebirds are family. Btw, I love my Vettes also!

My first loves will ALWAYS be the 1'st gen camaro and Chrome bumpered C3's.
There is also a special place in my heart for 67-69 Barracudas.
Personally I have no rivalry with any other car, except for ricers.

I have owned examples of both and love both. I currently have a 2000 Z28 with a 383/squeeze around 650rwhp and a 1990 Vette 'vert with a mild 383 for cruising. Both are great cars, but everybody underestimates the Camaro...until it's too late.
