It's a project for my middle son... Father/son time.. Priceless.. all of the views, no comments?? I thought the car looked pretty good for being almost 20 y/o...?

I like, clean 3rd gen.

I used to have a Formula 350 WS6 twin cat for a daily driver years ago. I made the mistake of letting it go down the road, kicked myself almost immediately. A few years later, I saw a red Formula sitting in the used car lot of a Hyundai dealership, pulled in to have a look. Yup, it was my old car. It was seriously beat up, ton of miles on it, overheatiing, steering wheel flopping around, aero wing busted, etc. I still considered buying it, but they wouldn't come down from the 4k asking price!?!

I can't tell, is your Z 305 or 350?

Congrats Very nice. One of my favorite Camaro body styles. These were quite potent in their day and now are reasonably inexpensive. (If you can find one that isn't trashed.) They make really nice street/track car for a young (or any) gear head on a budget. I never understood the whole Honda Civic craze with so many nice F-body cars available. Are you looking at getting it on the track someday?
A few years ago (quite a few) I had an '87 Z28 that I eventually turned into an all but dedicated track day car. With a few simple mods to the drivetrain, brake upgrades, and some safety enhancements it was very competitive. I logged a lot of laps in her at Sears Point and later on, at Seattle raceway and it was almost as good as my Z06 (no mods). I got the car for next to nothing, and it was cheap to insure, so I wasn't too worried about cosmetic damage or mechanical problems. I could just run it really hard. I still kick myself for selling it.

I hope you and your son have as much fun with yours as I did with mine.

Thanks for the positive kind words.. the car is an LB9 (305).. I too have one of those that "got away" My 1989 IROC was VERY RARE.. I ordered it that way stripped, L98,T5... It was a BAD car in the day.. Most call BS.. I have no reason to embelish or say something that is not true. I actually traded that car for the 93 Z28's when they came out. IDIOT!! here is a pic..

look closely at the clutch fluid resovoir, as well as the motor compared to the 305 in the 91 Z28...
here are some of my other Fbod's... My 86

My 78

My 93 "totaled in 95"

My 95 replacement

My 2000

My 93 Vette

My 18 y/o sons GTP

Guess you could call me a car fanatic...

Great project car. I have a '78 Z28, and a 96 RS. My brother has a '01 Z28.

Ha! I did a double take when I saw your '89, my '87 was exactly the same color, with the same blue stripe. I had the LB9/700R4 combo, and owned it for 7 years until the drivetrain basically wore out. Traded it in on a new 2000 SS.

Your son's '91 is a great choice. I've also never understood the Honda Civic thing; you can pour all the $$$ you want into a Honda Civic, but you can't change the fact that it is a basic econobox.

Hopefully he keeps the '91 basically stock, as that is a nice, clean example, which are becoming incredibly rare. I love 3rd Gens, and want to own another one day.

Don't you just want to kick yourself for getting rid of it...
My stripe was tourqouise in color.. i have see a few, but not many.. My clutch was going out in late 92 when the 4th gen 93 Z28's came out.. I just had to have one.. If i had only known what i had... I too like the 3rd gen.. I may just take your advise, keep the LB9 (305) Port,Polish the heads, slightly bigger cam, long tubes, an exhaust, and a nice little stall (2800-3200)... Maybe a 342/373 rearend... I'll post more "progress" pic's donw the road. thanks for the kind words...

I will admit, it was a really stupid thing to do, getting rid of my IROC-Z. I'd had it painted within the previous 3 years, and it had a custom interior ('95 TA seats, with door panels and back seat done in matching graphite vinyl, new carpet, great stereo). Unfortunately, the engine was basically worn out, and it barely passed emissions testing. The transmission was going, along with the rear end. I bought a '91 GTA (5.7L/700R4 hardtop), and then decided to factory order a 2000 SS when I heard GM was cancelling the F-bodies. I traded both cars.

If I had my life to live over, I would have dropped a completely new drivetrain into the IROC-Z, and I'd still be driving it today.

My first car was a 87 IROC 350 w/t-tops. They did not make many of those. I love the look of the 91/ 92 Z's. Congrats and enjoy.

Damn. Pics aren't coming thru for me. My works' firewall must be blocking it.

I had a '91 Z and loved it. Raced it a lot. It had a 305 and was running low 15's bone stock. With some mods and not breaking into the engine I had it running 13.1x's. Then the motor was pulled and put a 383 in it with a blower and was running low 9's high 8's with full interior, working headlights, power windows,locks,trunk,etc......

If you enjoy your 3rd gen half as much as I do, you will never sell it.

It should be a great project. With the LS6, it will be a monster sleeper. Taking your time will pay off big.
