Default 73 Small Block Water Pump Number

Anybody know the correct number for a 73 built in late July.
One restoration book I have states 330813, a second book states 330818.
I would like to purchase one, maybe at Carlisle, and in the future rebuild/install it on my 73.

Roger, you can save yourself a lot of headaches by just contacting a specialty vendor with your car's build date, and let him supply you with a pump that is correct and reasonably dated for your car.

In my experience, you will have an exhausting time turning over a lot of rocks at Carlisle trying to even find a correct pump, let alone one with a close casting date. One thing to consider is that some judges say the casting date can't be read on the back side of the pump and it is therefore not judged. My position was, if I am going to have to buy a water pump anyway, I would prefer one with a reasonable casting date, and I found one at a vendor now out of business. Try John Pirkle in Augusta GA at (706) 860-9047; he may be able to fix you up with what you need already rebuilt, and then you will be able to enjoy the show.

Roger,

The correct casting number is 813, there's thousands of them around from late '72 and up Corvettes. The numbers are not judged but the configuration is, so that's about all you have to worry about.

They pop up on eBay very often, I bought a correct spare for my early July '73 small block for $15.

My knowledge is centered more around 70-72, and I was unaware that the later pumps were that common.

Using the information that Mike provided here, you might want to consider doing a little shopping at Carlisle or ebay if you are not in a hurry. You may be able to save a few bucks on a core, but unless you have a hydralic press, and can procure an overhaul kit, you will still have to have someone overhaul it for you. I don't know if individual overhaul kits can be purchased or not.

I have taken a water pump apart, but have never chanced rebuilding one for myself...an overhaul kit would include a new shaft/bearing assembly plus the mechanical seal capsule. It seemed pretty straight forward.

Rebuilding it would be no problem. The only problem is where does one get a rebuild kit?

Hello, I think that Zip and other vendors offer a rebuild kit, 813 is the second type with large shaft, post 71.

In my "shopping" at Carlisle I ran across a water pump witha casting nuber of 330813P. It also had GM cast into it but no date code. Just in front of the casting number are two letters, maybe RP, rochester products?. Also the pulley mounting hub has two set of bolt patterns.
Anyone have any idea of the difference between this pump and the standard 330813?

"RMS73 "-----

The water pump with the "P" suffix code is a GM SERVICE replacement water pump of later manufacture (after 1982).

The GM #330813 water pump was used from about April, 1972 right through to the end of C3 production. It's only application, though, was Corvettes and some medium-to-heavy duty trucks. However, it is a fairly common casting since it was used for so many years and was sold as a NEW GM/Delco SERVICE replacement for 25+ years.
