Fan shroud question for '71 270hp
I have a 71 with a base 270 horse engine. It is all original.
It has a metal fan shroud. Is this correct? I've read that they only installed plastic shrouds with that motor.
Thanks in advance

Re: Fan shroud question for '71 270hp (71coupe)
After looking at Dobbins' "Fact Book of The 68-72 Stingray", fan shrouds appear to be plastic (Base L48 AND LT-1) or hard rubber (big blocks). Only the ZR-1, of which only 8 were made, may have had a metal shroud.

Thanks for the reply - I've read conflicting information too. It's probably a case of the assembly line subsituting a componet because of a shortage.

"71 coupe"-----
If you have a 1971 with the base engine, manual transmission, and without A/C, then your car was originally equipped with an aluminum radiator, GM #3155316, an external supply tank, GM #3016340, and a circular, fabricated STEEL fan shroud of GM #3938943.
If you have a 1971 with base engine, THM-400 transmission and/or A/C, then you car was originally supplied with a copper/brass radiator of GM #3018803 (manual trans with A/C) or GM #3018802 (THM with or without A/C), NO external supply tank, and a"plastic" fan shroud of GM #3956109.

Joe - It is a 4-speed w/o a/c. I will need to check the radiator this weekend.
Are the side tanks aluminum? Where would I find that part #?

I don't know about the rad but it should have an aluminum overflow tank. No rad cap on rad only on the overflow and a metal fan shroud. Thad

71 coupe-----
The GM #3155316 radiator had NO integral side tanks. It's, basically, just a core. The tank consists of the external aluminum supply tank mounted on the right side fender well area. If the radiator is an original (or an original replacement) it will have the number 3155316 on the top plate of the radiator---very easy to see and discern. It will also have a 3 character date code on the top plate. This will consist of the last 2 digits of the year of manufacture followed by an alpha-character for the month of manufacture (e.g.. 72B= February, 1972).
If there is no part number and if the radiator has side tanks, then you have a brass replacement for the original aluminum radiator. For cooling efficiency, I DEFINITELY DON'T RECOMMEND these.

Joe - You just described my radiator. I never knew I had an aluminum radiator.
Thanks for all of the info
