Default radio delete question

first off, follow the link and read the comment by JSB69. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zero...ply&id=3144142
if this is true, i'll just give up trying to find the single solitary 78 delete plate that was probably tossed in the trash the day after the car was originally purchased. what are the chances of a 68-76 radio delete plate fitting my bezel? i'm not familiar with the interior of the 68-76s, but i know the part # for the radio delete plates are different.

Brendan,

There were 46,776 Corvettes produced in 1978.

U58 AM-FM Stereo Radio 10,189 $286.00
U69 AM-FM Radio 2,057 $199.00
UM2 AM-FM Stereo Radio with 8-Track 20,899 $419.00
UP6 AM-FM Stereo Radio with Citizens Band 7,138 $638.00
Total with radios......40,283

That should leave 6,493 without radios (from the factory).

The 1978 Corvette Registry lists the UL5 radio delete RPO. Since the radio was not standard, I wonder what the UL5 was even listed for?

Looks like 1978 Corvettes did NOT come standard with a radio.

According to the Oct/Nov 1978 issue of Corvette News, it states:
"For the first time, the AM/FM radio comes standard on the new Corvette."

The above quote is from an article about the then new 1979 Corvette.

paragon reproductions told me that as far as they know, there is no such thing as a radio delete plate for a 78 vette. also, if every base pace car came with the UM2 option, i wonder if that isn't considered in the numbers shown on the corvette registry since it is listed as optional equipment for every 78 vette.

If I remember this properly, the radio after market made a legal case against the auto manufactures for forcing radios on the buying public by making radios standard equipment on auto's, thus forcing you to by a Delco radio or whatever came standard. The result was a credit to the buyer if you did not want the standard radio. I dont remember what the Corvette radio delete was. Maybe someone else can comment on this.
