The Chicago Fire Department is warning the public about an emergency services drill that will take place this weekend in the area around Willis Tower in downtown.
In a public advisory released Wednesday, the department says that the drill will begin around 5 p.m. and could last until midnight. There will be a “large-scale” police and fire presence around the building, and radio traffic will sound like an actual emergency is taking place, but the public is assured that it is only a drill.
According to the fire department, numerous streets will be closed around the tower, including Franklin, Quincy, and Adams, during the drill.
The county board on Thursday approved a resolution expressing its opposition to restrictions that could interfere with Second Amendment rights, though officials acknowledged the measure as more of a signal than anything enforceable. The move follows similar steps taken by dozens of downstate counties this year to signal support for gun rights.
The measure was approved 13-6, with a handful of Democrats joining all present Republicans in favor of it.
Per the resolution, the county would “hereby oppose the enactment of any legislation that would infringe upon the right of the people to keep and bear arms and consider such laws to be unconstitutional and beyond lawful legislative authority.”

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) _ Two public defenders from Peoria County say requiring permits to carry firearms outside the home is unconstitutional.
The Peoria Journal Star reports that defense attorneys Chandra Justice and Mark Rose have filed motions in several cases in which defendants are charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Illinois allows carrying concealed firearms with a permit. Justice and Rose argue requiring a permit violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms. They say their clients work and live in unsafe neighborhoods and have a right to protect themselves.
Peoria County State’s Attorney Jerry Brady’s office says the premise is flawed because it relies on a federal appeals court case from Hawaii where there is no mechanism for carrying weapons.
The motions are scheduled for late December hearings.
Rhonda Ezell founded Chicago Guns Matter as a way to advocate gun ownership in the Windy City but also to give a face to those who want to own a firearm for protection in a city that has become synonymous with gun violence.
“The goal of Chicago Guns Matter is to educate the black and urban communities on how to legally possess and obtain an Illinois concealed carry license, as well as educate them on the plaintiffs who’ve stood up for them and fought for their rights and are still fighting for their rights,”.
The event, which was CPD's second of the year, offered a $100 gift card in exchange for a firearm, a $10 gift card for BB guns, replicas and air pistols.
"I'm not shocked at the number. We know there's a lot of guns out there," said Chicago police Sgt. Don Jerome, of the 9th District.
Wayne County (MI) Commissioner's personal mission to boost cost of bullets
Wayne County Commissioner Reggie Davis plans to push for a vote on a bullet tax resolution to curb gun violence, despite remarks from the chairman that the commission has "has no plans to take up this measure at this time."
Davis, who represents the sixth district and used to own several guns, wants the state to raise taxes on ammunition and mandate mental illness checks for buyers. The tax revenue would be used for gun safety and gun rights education.
He hopes the plan would be adopted by state and federal lawmakers.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined forces with suburban mayors on Tuesday to call for a 20- to 30-cents-a-gallon increase in the state’s gasoline tax to bankroll sorely needed mass transit and road improvements.
At a City Hall news conference Tuesday, Emanuel argued that 24 states have raised their gas tax since 2012 alone. Meanwhile, Illinois is “stuck in neutral” with a gas tax that’s been frozen at 34 cents a gallon since 1990.
Even so, consumers are likely to suffer from sticker shock. An increase of 30 cents a gallon would amount to a staggering 88 percent hike. An increase of 20 cents a gallon would amount to a nearly 59 percent hike.
By starting the bidding at 30 cents a gallon, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus is giving Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker some room to maneuver.
If Pritzker settles on an gas tax increase that’s somewhat less than 30 cents a gallon, he can look like a hero to consumers.

For years, Chicago, Illinois has been the epicenter of the gun control movement. The city has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation yet they continue to have some of the highest crime and murder rates. And it's not coincidental.
In fact, police officers in Chicago have seized more than 9,100 illegal firearms this year alone. And it could easily surpass 10,000 by the end of the year.

The Chicago Police Department says officers have seized more than 9,600 illegal guns so far this year and the department is on pace to recover about 900 more guns than were taken off the city's streets in 2017.
The department has made a concerted effort in recent years to find as many illegal guns as possible, and the total has climbed to the point where police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says in a news release that officers in 2018 were taking more than one illegal gun off the street every hour.
The department says the seizures — along with making more than 4,200 arrests on gun-related charges this year — is part of a strategy that has helped significantly reduce the number of homicides, robberies and other violent crimes in 2018.

The Ohio General Assembly has voted to override Gov. John Kasich’s veto on, HB 228, a bill that would revamp the way the state handles self-defense cases in court.
The law shifts the burden of proof in self-defense cases from the defense to the prosecution. It had strong support from pro-gun groups, who said this would put Ohio in step with every other state in the country.

Incoming Dem Illinois governor could sign gun dealer licensing bill vetoed by predecessor
An aide to Pritzker told the Chicago Tribune that the proposal is expected to be among the first slate of issues to reach Pritzker's desk, adding that the soon-to-be governor likely would sign the legislation.
The bill, which would have required the state to license and regulate gun shops, was approved by lawmakers last year after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., and after the killing of Chicago police Cmdr. Paul Bauer. Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) vetoed the bill in the spring, according to the Tribune.
