INDIANAPOLIS -- A house bill that's been introduced in the state legislature would protect Hoosiers who shoot someone in self defense and cleared of criminal wrongdoing from lengthy civil lawsuits.
State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) has introduced HB 1284, which would require a judge to decide early during the pre-trial process to decide whether a civil lawsuit brought on by an individual or family of someone who has died from the result of a shooting where the defendant was found justified in using deadly force.
IL Woman With Concealed Carry License Who Shot Robber Called A ‘Hero’
CHICAGO (CBS)– Residents are praising the 25 year-old woman, with a concealed carry license, who shot and killed a man who was trying to rob her at a bus stop.
Surveillance video shows the woman waiting alone at a bus stop at 103rd and Wallace around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday. Police say a 19-year-old man, in a light colored hoodie, pulled a gun on the woman in an attempt to rob her.

“Chicago and their draconian laws should have nothing to do with Kankakee,” Wheeler said. “When you reach my age, a senior citizen, which is considered elderly, we should be allowed to carry guns and have no restrictions on magazines and bullets.”
The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Chicago lowered its body count in 2018, but the city still managed to record more homicides than Los Angeles and New York combined.
The revelation came as Chicago police made the first arrest of the new year for a “gun related crime” only two minutes after midnight. Predictably, the guy they arrested had prior convictions and he was described as an “armed habitual criminal.”
At least the suspect was not the first casualty of 2019. He reportedly fled from a traffic stop and was later sacked while carrying a handgun that turned out to have been stolen.
A few dozen people, some armed with rifles, handguns and extra ammunition, gathered outside the state Capitol Saturday to protest potential gun control measures they fear could come from either newly inaugurated Gov. Tony Evers and his administration or the federal government.
“We have a right to our own things that we want to own as long as I’m not harming anyone,” Chris Hinkley, of Waukesha, said.
As the small group gathered at the top of the Capitol steps facing State Street, the rally was met with counter-protesters who met on the 100 block of State Street and advanced to the lower levels of the steps to shout down the We the People speakers.
“This issue was brought to my attention by a few constituents who were essentially being penalized by submitting all required renewal documentation early within the 120-day timeframe recommended by the Illinois State Police,” said Reick. “These folks were receiving new cards that expired five years from the date their new information was processed rather than five years from the date their former card was issued. Gun owners who wish to carry are paying for a five-year permit, not a 4 ¾-year permit.”
A certification would cost retailers a maximum of $1,500, and the regulations would apply to small businesses as well as big-box retailers. Sellers without a retail location would be charged $300 for certification.
In a statement, Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson said “nothing in this bill is going to enhance public safety in Illinois.”
“The only thing that is being accomplished here is the creation of a bureaucratic nightmare for gun dealers,” he said. “Rest assured, we will be challenging this new law in court.”

“They’re all surrounded by people with guns to protect them for their safety but they want to take away the ability for the average person to have an effective means of self-defense,” Vandermyde said. “They want to make it harder for them to get guns. They want to put them at a disadvantage against the criminal element.”

Senate Bill 107, sponsored by Senator Julie Morrison (D-29), would brand many modern semi-automatic rifles, semi-automatic handguns, and shotguns commonly owned by law-abiding citizens as “assault weapons” and ban them along with spare parts and accessories.
Some examples to be banned include:
Any semi-automatic rifle or handgun that can accept a detachable magazine greater than ten rounds in capacity and has one or more features, such as a protruding grip for the support hand; a folding, telescoping, or thumbhole stock; a handguard; or a muzzle brake or compensator.
Any semi-automatic shotgun that has one or more feature such as the ability to accept a detachable magazine; a folding, telescoping, or thumbhole stock; or a protruding grip for the support hand.
Any fixed magazine semi-automatic rifles or handguns greater than ten rounds in capacity and fixed magazine semi-automatic shotguns greater than five rounds in capacity.
Let JB Know that downstate Illinois will NOT stand for any type of 2A infringement. SB0107 is a “gateway” bill. Once SB0107 goes into effect, there will be nothing to stop Chicago from stripping what’s left of our 2nd Amendment rights.

"We are now seeing bills introduced that I call the gems of January. These bills clearly indicate where the anti-gun mob would like to go. As I write this, some bills have only been filed with the Clerk of the House or Senate so they have not gone anywhere yet. The clerk will send the bills to the House Rule Committee or the Senate Assignments Committee. A bill’s first stop is in the House Rules Committee or the Senate Assignments Committee. These Committees will decide which Committee in the respective legislative chambers will hear the first reading of the bills. It is here that witness slips will be submitted, testimony is heard and Amendments offered. A bill may be passed out of Committee and sent to whichever chamber or held in committee, or if it fails, that is the end of it. I might as well tell you that the gun bills will go to mostly anti-gun Committees. Elections have consequences.
Some of the gems that are out there are House Bill 888 (HB 888). HB 888 is an anti-gun social media bill. This bill is offered by newly elected State Representatives Daniel Didech (D-59 Buffalo Grove). This bill requires the Illinois State Police (ISP) to conduct a search of a person’s social media accounts before issuing or renewing their FOID card. You can also have your FOID card revoked if the ISP finds something they disagree with."

Several gun dealers in Central and Southern Illinois are closing their businesses rather than pay what they’re saying is thousands of dollars in costs to comply with a law enacted last month.
When he signed the bill into law last month, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said the Gun Dealer Licensing Act was about stopping straw buyers.
With an eye toward curbing Chicago’s gun violence, mayoral candidate Gery Chico would sue Indiana and Wisconsin—and a Cabela’s location in Hammond, Ind.—if they don’t take action to cut access to firearms.
“We can no longer take this,” he said at a recent candidates’ forum at Steinmetz College Prep on the Northwest Side. “I’ve said, if we can’t get Indiana and Wisconsin to work with us, we sue ’em, and that includes the Cabela’s gun shop right in . . . Hammond, Ind.”
