is not a waste of space to most of us. It means they're waiting to hear the answer to a question or subject that's already been raised in the thread. If there are a few of these in a thread, it's probably more likely that a question raised in the thread will be answered for them.

Some also use it to mark threads they want to come back to and read more. They will use the "My Recent Topics" option from the menu line in order to see threads they have been in.
