I have a custom photo that I want to use as my avatar, but when I downloaded from my picture folder, it ends up being vertical. What steps do I need to take to get it into normal horizontal position?

You will need to use a photo editor. Or you can post it and someone can correct it.
The picture appears vertical because the picture was taken in that position. Some photo viewers will read the orientation data, which is part of data that's also used for location data, camera properties, etc., within the picture and display it correctly. Not all viewers, nor all websites, read that data to "adjust" the orientation.
