Waiting 50 years makes it all the sweeter.
I became aware of Corvettes around 1959 or 1960 when I was 9 or 10 years old. By 1962 I wanted one in the worst way and that desire only became more earnest during the C2 years. My dream car was a Marlboro Maroon 1967 big block coupe. The C3 years saw me in college and getting married with no money and then frankly the C4 years didn't interest me at all. The C5 design re-captured my interest but putting kids through college and other practical things took priority.
On February 10th I'll celebrate my 60th birthday and my wife suggested 50 years was long enough for a man to have to wait for any dream to come true.
My first thought was that '67 coupe, but big block prices are out of my range and the market is able to devour a rookie like me who really doesn't possess the knowledge to accurately evaluate a $50,000+ collector car. Besides- I wanted to DRIVE my Corvette.
And so I began to look at C6 cars, pondering Z06 and Grand Sports but ultimately deciding that I ought to be able to pay cash for my "toy" and so I began looking at late model used base models.
Tonight I brought home a GM-certified 1LT Silver 2008 LS3 coupe with 10,700 miles on it. The car is a 1-owner trade-in and carries a 48-month, 48,000 mile GM-certified warranty from the 7/08 in-service date, so about 32 months or 38,000 miles for me.
$32,501 out the door and I never stopped smiling all the way home. I'll be lucky if I don't catch pneumonia standing around staring at it in the cold.
So NOW begins the endless thinking about modifications that always accompanies the purchase of a performance car. (I've had a few, just never a Vette.)
So I'll be reading along, learning, asking a few questions and playing with my toy. You'll know me because I'm the old white-haired guy that's grinning from ear to ear!
Here's a photo of the new toy. As you can see there's absolutely NOTHING special about it except for two things- It's paid for and it's MINE!
Thanks for putting up with the ramblings of a very happy old man tonight,
Steve
