Smog Pump Bypass

Smog Pump Bypass
I bought my 1988 Corvette Covertable about a year and a half ago. I love it so far. Last year however the smog pump began squeeling. No change in performance but I feel a vette should purr not squeel so I changed the pump. While I was doing it, I remembered hearing that bypassing the smog pump will add horsepower and improve gas mileage. If this is true is the difference significant and are there any consequences. Also, does the line from the pump need to be capped? Any input is appreciated.
