Default Valve lifters

Hi all,
I have a car with a 327 engine from 964.
engine has been standing for about 20 years, looks like been partly reconditioned but would not start.
Tried for several hours untill I decided to releive all the valve lash adjusters.Runs now with of course rattling rockers.Normally these engines were equipped with hydraulic lifters so I came to the conclusion thet either solid lifters were used or the hydraulic ones were wrongly adjusted(too much tension).
I am a European so not really used to hydraulic lifters. Is there a way of finding out without takjing the inlet manifold off? I measured the distance of a rocker that is put under tension but after a few hours the distance stayed the same. Do the hydraulic lifters go off after say one night? Or is there another simple method to find out what sort is put in?
Thks,
Dirk,Antwerp,Belgium,car is Gordon Keeble

Welcome to the CF! Your question can probably be answered quicker if you post it in the C1 & C2 section.

Welcome to the forum!

Perhaps after sitting for so long, the hydraulic lifters collapsed, and led the original owner to adjust improperly?

Once the engine is running, they will fill up with oil, and should hold it internally without collapsing. Then you can properly adjust valve train lash.
