ZO6 DRY SUMP OILING SYSTEM

This is from the August 2005 Tech Link Newsletter

The Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine has a dry sump oiling system designed to keep the engine fully lubricated during the high cornering loads the Corvette Z06 is capable of producing. The LS7’s dry sump system was developed and tested on racetracks in the U.S. and Europe, including Germany’s famed Nürburgring. And while dry sump oiling is common in racing cars, the Corvette Z06 is one of just a handful of production vehicles -- and the only production Corvette -- to incorporate such a high-performance oiling system.

What is a Dry Sump Oiling System?
Most automotive engines use a wet sump system, in which all of the engine oil is stored inside the crankcase in the oil pan. In a dry sump oiling system, engine oil is stored in a reservoir external to the engine, so the crankcase contains only a minimal amount of oil at all times.

What are the Advantages of a Dry Sump System?
In an engine with a conventional wet sump oil pan, the oil can slosh away from the oil pump pickup tube during high dynamic maneuvers like cornering, braking and accelerating. This starves the engine of oil, causing bearing damage or catastrophic engine failure.

The dry sump system stores engine oil in a tall and narrow oil reservoir. This shape prevents oil from sloshing away from, or uncovering, the oil pickup, even under extremely high dynamic maneuvers. The dry sump system enables increases to the dynamic capabilities of the vehicle, which is why racing cars and exotic sports cars use this type of oil system.

Additionally, oil aeration is lower in a dry sump system, because the oil spends less time in the presence of the crankcase windage. Oil delivered to the bearings is typically superior to that of a wet sump system.

Finally, without the need for a conventional sump, the engine can be placed lower in the vehicle, effectively lowering the center of gravity of the vehicle.

How Does a Dry Sump System Work?
In the LS7 engine, two oil pump sets (scavenge pump and supply pump) are located in the same housing on the nose of the crankshaft. The location is common with the oil pump in other small block engines.

The scavenge pump removes engine oil and air from the sump and pumps both to an external reservoir for conditioning and storage.

The oil is directed to the top of the reservoir, where it is allowed to spill onto a spiral-shaped baffle. Crankcase gases and air are separated from the oil and are returned by the PCV system to the engine, where they are burned. The deaerated and conditioned oil collects in the bottom of the reservoir, ready for use.

The supply pump draws the conditioned oil from the reservoir, pressurizes it, and feeds it to the engine by way of the oil filter and oil cooler. After the oil passes through the engine, it again flows into the sump to be returned by the scavenge pump to the reservoir once again.

Checking the Oil Level
The engine must be warmed up. Cold oil will not give a correct oil level reading.

After the engine is warmed up to at least 175°F (80°C), shut off the engine. Checking the oil with the engine running will result in an incorrect reading.

Wait for 5 minutes (but not more than 20 minutes), to allow the oil to drain and settle.

Pull the dipstick with the yellow handle from the reservoir, and clean it with a lint-free cloth. Then push it back in all the way until it stops. Remove it again, keeping the tip down, and note the oil level on the crosshatched area.

An oil level within the crosshatched area is normal. If the level is below the crosshatched area, add 1 quart (0.96 L) of 5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil through the black oil reservoir fill cap and take another reading.

TIP: Do not overfill the reservoir, as this may result in excessive oil consumption. Oil levels above the crosshatched area may degrade lubrication system performance.

Oil Change Procedure
Remove the two drain plugs from the engine oil pan . One is located on the left side of the oil pan near the oil filter. This plug drains the small amount of residual oil from the engine oil pan, approximately 1 quart (0.96 L). The other drain plug is located on the front of the oil pan. This plug drains the external reservoir and hose assembly. Also remove the engine oil filter.

Once the oil has been drained from the engine and reservoir, replace the engine oil filter with a new PF48 oil filter and tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).

Replace both oil drain plugs and tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).

Fill the oil through the oil fill cap in the top of the dry sump reservoir. The total service fill, with a dry filter, is 8 quarts (7.57 L) of 5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil.

Replace the oil fill cap and start the engine. Let it run at idle for at least 15 seconds to circulate the fresh engine oil through the lubrication system. (This is similar to running an engine after a radiator fill, to purge air from the system.)

Check the oil level according to the instructions above. The oil change is now complete.

TIP: The owner’s manual may contain a slightly different procedure, which calls for filling 7 quarts, running the engine then shutting off, and finally filling 1 additional quart. This procedure may be used, although it is not necessary.

TIP: There is a cap on the right valve cover under the decorative cover. Attempting to remove this cap can break the retaining tabs, requiring removal of the valve cover to retrieve broken pieces. Under no circumstances should you attempt to fill the engine oil system through this cap.

TOP TIER DETERGENT GASOLINE

This is from the July 2005 Tech Link Newsletter.

TOP TIER standards developed by BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota were aimed at reversing the national trend toward lower gasoline additive concentration. The U.S. EPA requires a minimal amount of detergent additive in all gasoline. However, the level is often not sufficient to prevent engine deposits from forming. TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline helps keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the minimum amount required by government regulation, and helps provide optimal fuel economy, performance, and reduced emissions.

In the past twelve months, six fuel marketers have joined the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline program:

CHEVRON TEXACO SHELL QUIK TRIP ENTEC STATIONS
CONOCO PHILLIPS MFA OIL COMPANY

Together they represent about 35 percent of all the gasoline sold in the U.S.

TOP TIER gasoline suppliers are listed on the GM Techlink website shown at the start of section B, under the Reference Guides Tab.

Erratic fuel gauge readings, fuel gauge reads empty when there is fuel in tank, DTC PO463 set, service fuel system message displayed.

This calls for replacing the LH fuel tank level sensor

NO CRANK, PRNDL IS INOPERATIVE

This is not a TSB but a service note in the July 05 Tech Link

Owners of some 2005 Chevrolet Corvettes and 2004-05 Cadillac XLRs may experience a no-crank condition, with no codes in any module. The concern may be followed by an inoperative transmission range indicator (PRNDL). The Tech 2 will show the transmission range circuits are all reading high when any gear is selected.

Check for a loose or broken ground G402 at the right rear suspension cradle. Also see Service Information document 1495107.

TURNING CROSS-DRILLED ROTORS

fig 16

fig 17

Cross-drilled brake rotors (fig. 16) are being used on the 2005 1/2 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP, and available on the 2005 Chevrolet C6 Corvette and the upcoming Cadillac XLR-V.

If required, these brake rotors can be machined on a lathe in a similar manner to standard rotors.

TIP: When cutting rotors, use positive rake tooling on the lathe (fig. 17). Positive rake tooling requires less cutting pressure, reduces chatter, and improves surface finish. When setting up the brake lathe, be sure to use a vibration dampener/silencer.

Using SI procedures, apply a non-directional finish to the rotor surface after machining by using a sanding block and 150-grit aluminum oxide sandpaper.

.

Condition/Concern:
A dealer technician may find signs of oil leaking at the oil cooler lines or
oil filter base.

Recommendation/Instructions:
This is a service VME to all Chevrolet dealers relating to 2005 Corvettes with
complaints of oil leaks at the oil cooler lines.
There has been a reported case of an oil cooler line leaking at the oil filter
base. The oil cooler lines attach to an adapter located above the oil filter.
If a customer complaint of an oil leak is discovered, the technician should
clean the area and test drive the vehicle to determine if it is a leak or
residual oil from the assembly process. Bowling Green has instituted a process
to clean the area around the oil filter base after the lines are connected. This is Art Spong Brand Quality manager for the Corvette. . Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the
condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining
steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the
condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.

ERRATIC FUEL GAGE, 2002-2005 CORVETTE AND XLR

SERVICE - ALL CHEVROLET & CADILLAC DEALERS

Subject: 2002-2005 Chevrolet Corvette and 2004-2005 Cadillac XLR Fuel Gauge Is
Erratic
Message #: VSS20050445
2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 Chevrolet Corvette and 2004-2005 Cadillac XLR (Y-Body)
Fuel Gauge is Erratic
Art Spong 586-947-8890

General Motors is in the process of redesigning the fuel tank sending units in both of the subject vehicles. A new part number has been released but it is not yet in stock. Some dealers have attempted to order the new parts 88967315 or 7316 and they have been told that the parts are not yet available. The new parts have an improved ink coating which will provide improved resistance to fuel contamination and correct fuel sender over travel which is the primary cause for the fuel gauge being erratic. Fuel Modules should not be replaced for complaints of erratic fuel gauge. The fuel sender card is the only part required.

Until the new fuel sender cards are available, the 2004 card is available and can be used. Part number 10310028 left side and 10310103 for the right side will operate in all 2002 through 2005 applications. However it does not have the improved ink path. In cases where a customer insists on a replacement part, the 2004 part can be used although it is the same part that is currently in their car. Availability is expected by the end of April. A bulletin will be released with correct part numbers as soon as the parts become available.

C6 CORVETTE IP COMPARTMENT DOOR WARPED

This information is from a March 05 Tech Link News Bulletin

Owners of some 2005 Corvettes may comment that the I/P compartment door appears warped and extends outward near the center IP. This may be caused by the torque sequence when the door is installed by the plant.
To correct the condition, loosen the attaching screws at the bottom of the door. Then retighten the screws, beginning with the outboard screw, the one on the right side and then the inboard screws.

Transparent Tops: I have called GM Parts Technical Assistance as there has been much confusion about the glass tops as GM Parts lists 2 different tops at very different prices. The following is a quote from GM. “ If your car has the CF7 option you must use the more expensive accessory top. If your car has the C2L or CC3 option ( came from the factory with dual or glass top; not just the painted top) you can use the less expensive top that comes as a partial assy. Note: you would need to also get the latches, weatherstrips etc.
The difference is in the fit. The tops look similar, but a C2L or CC3 top will
LEAK LIKE A SIVE when put on a car with CF7.”

CORVETTE KEYLESS IGNITION

This is taken from an August 2004 GM Tech Link Newsletter.

The 2005 Corvette keyless access system uses a coded transmitter fob.
With the transmitter fob inside the passenger compartment, pressing the START button on the instrument panel starts the engine. The engine is turned OFF by briefly pressing the OFF/ACC button.
TIP: In most respects, this system is identical to the one used on the
Cadillac XLR. However, there are some differences in the keyless access system when the Corvette is equipped with a manual transmission.
The ignition is not designed to turn off on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission unless the transmission is in REVERSE. This means the ignition state will be Key On, Engine Off if the transmission is not in Reverse when the OFF/ACC button is pressed.
This can affect some service procedures because the engine control module (ECM) remains awake in the Key On, Engine Off state.
TIP: When performing any service procedure calling for turning the ignition OFF on a manual transmission car, be sure to place the transmission
in Reverse before pressing the OFF/ACC button.
After a reprogramming event or after performing a CKP System Variation
Learn Procedure, it’s necessary to turn the ignition OFF for a period of time, to allow the data to be written to long term memory because the ECM is waiting for the ignition state to be OFF.
If the engine is started or the ignition is turned back to RUN under the assumption that the ignition had bee turned off after the procedure, the write is aborted and all of the learned information is lost.
In the case of an ECM reprogramming or replacement, it could appear that the ECM did not properly program. With a CKP learn, the ECM will not store the learned values, which may cause DTC’s to set.
TIP: If battery voltage drops below 9v the electronic control modules shut down.

TOP TIER DETERGENT GASOLINE

This information applies to all 2005 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks. (U.S. and Canada only)
Top Tier Detergent Gasoline, a new class of gasoline with enhanced detergency, will be appearing at retail stations of some fuel marketers. This gasoline meets new, voluntary deposit control standards developed by GM, BMW,
Honda and Toyota.
The U.S. EPA requires all gasoline sold in the U.S. to contain a detergent additive. However, the requirement is minimal and in many cases is not sufficient to keep engines clean. A higher level of detergent is needed than what is required by the EPA. Top Tier Detergent Gasoline exceeds the detergent requirements imposed by the EPA.
The four corporations recognized the benefits to both the vehicle and the consumer. Also, joining together emphasized that low detergency is an issue of concern to several automotive companies.
All vehicles will benefit from using Top Tier Detergent Gasoline, which will help keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the lowest additive concentration set by the EPA. Clean engines help provide optimal fuel economy and performance, and reduced emissions. Those vehicles that have experienced deposit related problems would especially benefit from the use of Top Tier
Detergent Gasoline.
The Top Tier program, begun on May 3, 2004, is a voluntary program initiated by the four automotive companies. Some fuel marketers have already joined, although not all fuel marketers will off Top Tier Detergent Gasoline.
Once fuel marketers make public announcements, a list of all fuel marketers meeting Top Tier standards will be made available. For now, it will be necessary to look for the “Top Tier” designation at the gas pump.

Info - Top Tier Detergent Gasoline (Deposits, Fuel Economy, No Start, Power
Performance, Stall Concerns) #04-06-04-047C - (Dec 14, 2004) Top Tier Detergent Gasoline (Deposits, Fuel Economy, No Start, Power,
Performance, Stall Concerns)
2005 and Prior All General Motors Passenger Cars and Trucks (U.S. Only) 2005 and All Prior Saturn Vehicles 2003-2005 HUMMER H2 This bulletin is being revised to include additional gasoline brands that currently meet the Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Standards and add Saturn to the
Models section. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-06-04-047B

(Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).
A new class of gasoline, called Top Tier Detergent Gasoline, is appearing at retail stations of some fuel marketers. This gasoline meets detergency standards developed by four automotive companies. A description of the concept and benefits of Top Tier is provided in the following question and answer section.

Gasoline Brands That Currently Meet Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Standards As of December 8, 2004, the following gasoline brands meet the Top Tier
Detergent Gasoline Standards:
• Chevron has markets in 29 states in the West, Southwest and South, as well as in Alaska and Hawaii. ALL grades of Chevron with Techron gasoline meet Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Standards.

• QuikTrip (not to be confused with Kwik Trip) QuikTrip operates convenience stores and travel centers in a number of metropolitan areas:

• Tulsa, OK

• Springfield, MO

• Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS

• Wichita, KS

• Des Moines, IA

• Omaha, NE

• St. Louis, MO and St. Louis, IL

• Atlanta, GA

• Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX

• Phoenix, AZ

• Bartlesville, OK

• Miami, OK

• Vinita, OK

• Columbia, MO

• Conoco has over 4,000 stations located in 33 states.

• Phillips 66 has locations in 32 states across the nation.

• 76 has over 2,700 stations located throughout the country.

• Shell
Shell Oil Products has a network of nearly 7,000 branded gasoline stations in the Western United States. Shell Oil Company markets branded products through more than 10,000 stations in the Eastern and Southern United
States.

• Entec Stations offer gasoline through stations located in the greater Montgomery, Alabama area.

What is Top Tier Detergent Gasoline?
Top Tier Detergent Gasoline is a new class of gasoline with enhanced detergency. It meets new, voluntary deposit control standards developed by four automotive companies that exceed the detergent requirements imposed by the EPA.

Where Can Top Tier Detergent Gasoline Be Purchased?
The Top Tier program began on May 3, 2004. Some fuel marketers have already joined and have introduced Top Tier Detergent Gasoline. This is a voluntary program and not all fuel marketers will offer this product. Once fuel marketers make public announcements, they will appear on a list of brands that meet the Top Tier standards.

Who developed Top Tier Detergent Gasoline standards?
Top Tier Detergent Gasoline standards were developed by four automotive companies: BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota.

Why was Top Tier Detergent Gasoline developed?
Top Tier Detergent Gasoline was developed to increase the level of detergent additive in gasoline. The EPA requires that all gasoline sold in the U.S. contain a detergent additive. However, the requirement is minimal and in many cases, is not sufficient to keep engines clean. In order to meet Top Tier Detergent Gasoline standards, a higher level of detergent is needed than what is required by the EPA. Also, Top Tier was developed to give fuel marketers the opportunity to differentiate their product.

Why did the four automotive companies join together to develop Top Tier? All four corporations recognized the benefits to both the vehicle and the consumer. Also, joining together emphasized that low detergency is an issue of concern to several automotive companies.

What are the benefits of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline?
Top Tier Detergent Gasoline will help keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Clean engines help provide optimal fuel economy and performance and reduced emissions. Also, use of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline will help reduce deposit related concerns.

Who should use Top Tier Detergent Gasoline?
All vehicles will benefit from using Top Tier Detergent Gasoline over gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Those vehicles that have experienced deposit related concerns may especially benefit from use of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline.

CD WON’T PLAY ABOVE A CERTAIN TRAC #

GM has released a TSB # 04-08-44-023 concerning this problem. It state this is due to a software anomaly within the radio preventing further tracks from being recognized.
Engineering is working to develop and validate a software fix for this condition. Until such time as the software is available, use the following procedure as a short- term fix.

1. Remove the Radio/S-Band/VICS 15-amp fuse from the I/P electrical center (passenger side) for 30 seconds.
2. Reinstall fuse.
3. Advise the customer that the issue may return if they utilize another MP3 disc that contains less than 30 tracks/files. If an MP3 disc with more than 30 tracks/files is inserted into the CD player/changer, this will also resolve the issue.

I will try to answer every one here!

rosemaryburm...That is what the picture appears to be as close as I can tell.

Bunker...the DSOM paint is now available and I am having Ken add it to the paint options this week!

AceVenture...There is not enough room allowed for me to have every bulletin posted. I try to post the ones that seem to be the most prevelant. If you have a specific concern or problem either call me at 800-234-5284 or email me at parts@fichtnerchevrolet.com and I will see what we can find for you! I can then email you the specific bulletin.

Jtimmerman...GM has not released any pricing on the 10 spoke wheels yet. When I talked to one of the senior people in GM accessories they said the wheels won't be available until late fall at the earliest and maybe not until the first of the year.

Bob,

Just fyi, the DSOM paint option has not been added to the online site yet and Nassau Blue is listed about six times also. Needs a little tweaking.

Thanks!

Ken,

Thanks for updating the order website and I hate to be a pain in the you know what but DSOM is not listed under the spray can section, just the touch-up section. Is it available in spray can?

Thanks again,
Pete
