Default Scenic Driving Advice, Estes Park area

Hi Colorado Folks,

I am planning to drive my C7 to Colorado for a week or so during the first 2 weeks in May. My plan was to spend a day or so driving through Colorado Springs and then on up to Estes Park for 4-6 days. I figured on using Estes Park as a base for some scenic mountain driving. My wife however has pointed out that we may not be able to find enough scenic routes in the immediate vicinity and it might be better to spend a couple of days there and then move on to another location.

Opinions?

What are some "no miss" roads that I should consider? I prefer not to drive on gravel roads because of the possibility of paint chips.

Thanks in advance.

The best road, Trail Ridge Road, will be closed until Memorial Day. This is a normal closure, but there are plenty of places to go. If you just take route 70 out of Denver heading west u will have outstanding views. We still have plenty of snow in the mountains and we could get more while u are here. I'm sure someone else will chime in with many suggestions. Have a nice time in Colorado.

Where are you coming from? There are some nice day routes from the Colorado Springs area. A drive up Pikes Peak is a must do, although snow could be an issue in early May. Cripple Creek is a place to visit, and is a very scenic drive. The Colorado Springs Corvette club will be meeting on May 4th. If you're able, come to the meeting. Here is a website link: http://www.coloradospringscorvettecl.../Corvette.html
Shoot me a PM if you have any questions. I can help lay out some routes if you like.

Default Peak to Peak highway

You will want to take the Peak to Peak Hwy!
Go west from Denver on I-70 to the Central City Parkway. Go north to Central City. Then go north to Nederland, take Hwy. 72 to Allenspark, then Hwy. 7 north to Estes Park. All roads are paved.
It's a beautiful drive!

Hwy 14 west out of Ft Collins is a beautiful drive. Leave Colorado Springs(after seeing Manitou Springs, Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods) and north on I-25 to US34 west to Estes Park. Leave Estes Park east on US34, north to Ft Collins on I-25, west on Hwy 14, then south on Hwy 125, to US40 and then take US 34 north, back to Estes Park. then Hwy 7 south, to Hwy 72 south, to Hwy 119 south to the Central City Parkway and visit Central City and Blackhawk. Get on I-70 west to exit 240, and drive to the top of Mt Evans(14,264 feet).

Oh, and while touring the Garden of the Gods, the Bison Burgers are great in the Trading Post(neat place just to visit).

If you like old steam trains, then ride the Georgetown Loop and tour the gold mine.

The Woodland Park Lodge in Woodland Park(west of Pikes Peak on US24) is a great place to stay. West of Woodland Park is Hwy 67 south out of Divide, CO to Cripple Creek(great drive). I highly recommend touring the Mollie Kathleen gold mine(extremely interesting) on the left, that is on Hwy 67 just before you start the descent into Cripple Creek. I parked at the tourist center(paved lot) across the highway on the right and walked over to the mine(gravel lot).

As for snow, best to call some of the various tourist centers, check the national park website, and check the Colorado DOT for road conditions.
