On vacation in Cape May, NJ. Could see the twin tower smoke rising across the bay in NY. Stunned disbelief all day. Evening flag lowering ceremony on the Cape May beach point that evening with taps playing something I will never forget. Not a dry eye in the somber crowd.

I was just waking up for one of my first days in middle school.. I watched both of the towers fall. I went to school a little late that day and my mom said "If we die today, just know I love you"
At the time what my mom said scared the hell out of me.

One of my sons is a State Dept. foreign service officer. He was between assignments and at our home for a visit. We were eating breakfast before I was going to take him to the airport for a flight back to D. C. The TV was on but we were talking and eating, not really paying much attention. When the first report of a small plane crashing into a tower came on it caught our attention. Speculation both by television reporters and ourselves soon turned to growing concern as the images grew worse. When the second plane hit we were in utter disbelief followed by anger as we understood we were under attack. When the Pentagon was hit my son disappeared to another room to begin making phone calls to Washington. Obviously we never made the trip to the airport that day. I spent the day and most of the night glued to the television alternating between feeling sick and sheer anger.

I was driving to work and first heard about it on the radio. We set up a TV in our cube areas and watched. Its my son's birthday. He is 18 today.

I was at Kennedy Space Center in a conference room. Someone came into the room and said a small plane had crashed into the WTC. I remember thinking that how could someone crash into that building. We were standing around just talking about it and someone brought in a TV on a stand into the room. We were watching when the second plane hit. After that we knew it was no accident. The director brought everyone together and said a prayer. He told us to just leave the base and to go out the southern exit. There were lots of soldiers armed with machine guns at the guard shacks and the entrance. They did not stop us on the way out. Went back to my hotel called the wife and told her I would be driving home since all flights were grounded. My friend's wife that lived in Florida was having a wedding in Baltimore the following week. So she drove up with me. On the way home we drove by the Pentagon. It was lit up with spotlight's and was still smoking from the plane crash. Dropped her off in Baltimore and drove the rest of the way back to Freehold, NJ.

Sitting in my SNET work van in Canton, CT, talking to a work associate parked next to me, when we both heard on WTIC news radio that the first plane hit...then the second...after the 2nd one hit, we both said "terrorism" almost immediately...sat and listened for what seemed like quite a long time...then I had a service call at a house up the road...they were home but had not heard about the news, so I told the homeowner and they turned on the TV, which we all watched for a bit...that was a heavy day.

I guess I never posted in this thread.
I was a Captain for American Airlines pushing back from the gate in Detroit. Never even taxied. Pulled back in to the gate, went downstairs to Ops, saw the first tower come down and told my First Officer to call the hotel and get our rooms back. Then we as a crew went out and got on the van to the hotel before I even tried to call the company to see what they wanted us to do.
Glad I did as we didn't get home until Friday.
My brother was a Captain for United flying 767s from LAX to BOS. Needless to say, I was on the phone ASAP. He was off that day. Whew.
That day changed my career and life forever.
