An 18-year-old driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Kentfield failed to yield to the victim in the crosswalk, police said Tuesday.
William Leo Halstenson, 51, of Kentfield died about 9:30 p.m. Monday while crossing Sir Francis Drake Boulevard at Ash Avenue, just east of College Avenue. Halstenson was hit by an eastbound 2005 Chevy Impala and knocked toward the median strip farther up the street.
The driver, Michael McGhee of Pinole, immediately pulled off the road and waited for police. Firefighters pronounced Halstenson dead at the scene.
The California Highway Patrol closed eastbound Sir Francis Drake for several hours while they investigated the collision. On Tuesday, CHP Officer Nathan Campbell said it appeared that Halstenson was heading south in the crosswalk and was struck "due to the driver's failure to yield the right of way."
No charges were filed against McGhee on Tuesday as the investigation continued. McGhee submitted to a breath test at the scene and is not suspected of alcohol consumption, CHP Officer Patrick Roth said.
The CHP said the vehicle's speed was "undetermined."
Services are pending for Halstenson, a Corte Madera native who graduated from Redwood High School. In 1984, Halstenson suffered a major head injury in a vehicle collision and suffered permanent disabilities, said his aunt, Carol Vance.
"Everyone in the neighborhood knew him," Vance said. "He would go that direction all the time. He would take the buses and he did

a lot of walking."
Halstenson is survived by his parents, Leo and Ann Halstenson of Corte Madera; two brothers, Daniel of San Anselmo and Mitch of Petaluma; and numerous extended relatives.
Services will be at Monte's Chapel of the Hills at 330 Red Hill Ave. in San Anselmo.

Tragic indeed. One minute we're here and the next we're gone...sure puts things in perscpective when you read something like this so close to home. It doesn't always happen to the "other guy".
