New CA Exhaust Law Changes-Facts & Fiction
There is ALOT of fake articles and misinformation floating around the internet... the fact is there is NOT a $1000 fine. The law is pretty much the same as it always has been. I made the mistake of believing what I read.. here is an official statement by SEMA.
The changes are there is now a fine and you will be sent to the state ref. If you have illegal mods such as running catless then you will have issues. If you have cats and just a cat back you likely won't have issues.

I've lived in CA for all my life and cops aren't that bad.. follow the following rules and you most likely will have very few issues
#1-Don't have a crazy loud exhuast (Including running catless)
#2-Don't have very dark tint in the front like 5%
#3-Don't drive like a jack ***

yeah there has been a lot of false info out there.it's the same law that it has always been except now it's an automatic fine instead of a fix-it ticket.the first offence fine is $25 but with all the fees it's actually about $190.
i think at first you will see police enforce it because it will generate revenue but a year from now it will probably be just like it was last month.

Yeah, but it helps others justify their attack on CA, not matter how ignorant they are.

The fee schedule allows for a $1000 fine in some instances. It just depends on how it is written up. If the car is not obnoxious and you aren't doing dumb things with it on the street you are likely fine and at worst no worse off then last year.

Its the same law as it was. What changed is from correctable violation to non correctable.
You have an option to go to a BAR station and get checked and if its under 95db you can get the certificate.
We dont carry DB limit meter in our cars, so if i pull you over its up to my discretion to decide if exhaust is too loud or not..
Some of you know my cars.... they are for sure over 95db

Anyone know how BAR does the test? I assume its not an at-idle noise test... Do they put on dyno and load it? What load and RPM? I'm certain my Borla ATAK exceeds 95db at WOT lmao

Per this description https://bar.ca.gov/Consumer/Referee_...ification.html Looks like they follow SAE J1492:2008, but I cannot find a free copy of the process.
However, I did stumble on this, so it looks like I need to be careful LOL
Stock - 85.7 Decibels
Borla Touring - 94.2 Decibels
Borla S-Type - 97.0 Decibels
Borla ATAK - 102.3 Decibels

To add to it my CHP friend said they have NOT been told to enforce this anymore than they were before, but like said above it’s really just the discretion of the officer. If you’re not obnoxious and not driving like a jackass you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

I seem to recall I read somewhere the law didn't apply to motorcycles.
