Default Florida People, I have a simple question

I will be in Florida over the weekend and I was wondering if the sonic booms from the shuttle can be heard from Vero Beach. TIA

I don't know. I know they can be heard along the path of the shuttle as it comes back in. If the shuttle isn't passing near Vero Beach, then you probably can't hear them.

It always scares the [email protected] out of me here in Melbourne.

The last time I was outside for one I heard them here on the West Coast and my buddy in Melbourne says he heard them as well. That's about 250 miles separation so I'd guess you could hear them in Vero as well.

I've never heard it. But I'm pretty far south.

Depends on the landing path, and there's usually two booms.

I hear it pretty clearly in Orlando, shakes everything, rattles the windows. Good times.

I doubt it. The shuttle is sub sonic by the time it reaches the east coast and Verio beach is pretty far south of the space center. If the wind is headed in your direction you might get lucky..

They are especially disturbing when they happen at night and you don't know they are about to happen. Scares the hell out of me. Sounds like something crashed into the roof.

Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. Same way with the roar from the launch. When this mission launched we watched from the beach and heard a slight roar about 3 minutes after liftoff. It mostly depends on wind direction.

BTW, if you're in Vero on Saturday there is a great car show at Riverside Park all day.

Liftoff the other day.......

The approach path varies a bit, and I know that even in Melbourne I won't necessarily hear it (I do more often than not though). So in Vero I would think you're just a bit too far south.

Short answer, very likely. Longer answer, BOOM level will depend on the landing direction. South to North you will hear two very loud booms in rapid order. If the landing is North to South you should hear it but not as loud. Why not drive up to Eckler's and watch from their parking lot, only about an hours drive from Vero.

Saw that from the fishing pier at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral.

Unfortunately, it took me 3 hours to get from the parking lot to I95, and I didn't get back to my Mom's house in the Tampa area until 2am.

This pic taken right after liftoff shows how much further south Vero is. And yes, I heard about the gridlock thruout Brevard, especially along A1A......
