OKC Mayor Mick Cornett recognized as second best mayor in the world

The World Mayor Project recognizes top mayors each year. Cornett won second in this year's competition behind Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard. Cornett was the top placing U.S. mayor and one of only two in the group's top 10.

Cornett said the award is more about the city's progress than him.

“It's more embarrassing than anything else to the extent that the award seems to be about one person,” Cornett said. “I think it's an acknowledgment of Oklahoma City's progression. The citizens should feel good about it.”

In explaining why Cornett placed second and won a World Mayor Commendation for services to his city, the group credited Cornett for the city's recent economic success.

“Described by one of his peers as a giant among American mayors, Mayor Cornett has turned the city, psychologically devastated by the terrorist bombing of April 1995, into one of the most vibrant and economically booming cities in the U.S.,” the group said.

Cornett was praised for his efforts at improving public health by putting the city on a diet, along with the success of MAPS and the city's resiliency in the recent national recession.

Cornett said he is trying to reach Ebrard to congratulate him. He said it seems odd to see Oklahoma City recognized on a list of award winners from Italy, Venezuela, Canada, Australia and Germany, among other countries.

“This organization does a lot of due diligence in trying to keep track of progressive cities all over the globe,” Cornett said. “Of cities under 20 million (residents), I guess we are at the top of the list.”

CLIFF'S NOTES:
OKC has 2nd best mayor in the world.

---------------------

If he hadn't nixed OKC getting a lingerie football team, he'd have my vote for first bestest mayor in the world.

A friend of mine coaches the team in Chicago. Here is a little of what you missed:

Being mayor of Mexico City and actually living deserves a medal in itself.

Too bad about the football team.

Because of this big liberal arts college here, Athens is the most "progressive" city in the state. We just recently elected (last week run-off) a non-hippy mayor for the first time since I've lived here. Finally some hope and change!

Libs and hippies are good for the restaurant/music/art scene. They just need to stay TFO of politics. Well, except for when lingerie football is involved.

They gave Villaretardo of Los Angeles a nod a few years back. That right there would make me question the organization's credibility but then a few years before that they gave Richard Daly of Chicago a nod. Somehow they missed greats like Nagin and Barry.

I put zero stock in something like this, but our Mayor has done what we call down here a sh**load of stuff to make the city better.

The football team would have been icing on the cake. But, in any case, that's cool that he did so well.

It takes a lot of work to be a pandering playboy blowhard.
