Default one of my cars was stolen last night..

..out of my garage!!

we have a 97 oldsmobile aurora (actually pretty nice ride) that we let the kids use. we have a bad habit around here with leaving the big garage door open.

came home at 1am to find a bicycle in my driveway that is not ours. best we can determine..somebody riding a bicycle entered my open garage between 9-12 pm and stole the Aurora. unfortunately we keep the keys in the car.

when i told the cop that the keys were probably in the car when it was stolen he said my insurance (geico) may have an issue with that.

all this happened while my 19 yr old and the dog was home. nobody heard anything.

am i fuked?

My unlocked Vette is in a locked garage (door down) under the house. House/garage has a alarm system and the keys are never left around vehicle.

A open garage door

I would say your F-ed. A good $1500 worth.

Was the garage door left unlocked?

the garage is attached to the house. i shut the big door when i left at 6:30. one of my 3 kids must of opened it and it remained open until about midnight when my oldest closed it before he went to bed. he actually moved the bike out of the way of the door. he assumed his younger brother had the Aurora.

Why does anyone leave the keys in their car? I just don't get the time savings aspect of it...

i guess we do it out of convenience. we have 4 vehicles and 4 drivers. just easier to pull in the garage and leave them in the car. then when the next person gets in they're not looking for the keys.

if i have to pull the keys out ..lock the door and set the alarm in my own attached garage..i need to move.

And just where will you move TO? A desert island where you are the only inhabitant?

I'd say you gift-wrapped that car, and the thief probably could not believe his good luck. Door up? OK. Car unlocked? OK. Keys in the car? Maybe OK. Combination of any two above? NO!

Then you need to live on an isolated mountain somewhere. Being a victim of a crime many times is a crime of opportunity and it can happen to anyone at any time. I'm sure this thug who stole your car was just riding by and saw your garage door open........opportunity.

Take your keys out and always lock your doors.

Given the year and probable value of the car, I'd be hesitant to file a claim regardless of the move with the keys.

If you check is just a grand or so after the deductible, you'd want to weigh that with a possible rate increase or being dropped, etc.

I keep the keys in my winter ride (02 Silverado) because the keys have gotten so big that keys for 3 Chevys bind up on the ring. I could leave the keys in all 3, we live so far out in the sticks that nobody comes out here anyway.
