RIP, Ronnie.

One of his last gigs was at a little place in nearby Pleasanton, CA (he lived in the Bay Area), and I'd been thinking about going, but ended up having a conflict. A very talented player, who could play in a variety of styles. Besides his namesake band (with Sammy Hagar on vocals), he played on the Edgar Winters Band's biggest album (the one with Frankenstein on it), and on Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey" (not exactly the same styles....).

Kind of related in a "six degrees of Kevin Bacon" way, is Jason Becker.

For those who don't remember Jason Becker, he was a teen "phenom" guitarist who landed the gig with playing in David Lee Roth's band right after the first break-up of Van Halen. (The "six degrees" connection between Montrose and Becker is via Hagar, through Van Halen, to the David Lee Roth Band...) But during rehearsals for their tour, he started experiencing the first symptoms of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), which steadily took away his ability to play. He's stayed involved in music, using a variety of tools to overcome his near-total paralysis, and is now in his early 40's. The documentary about his life is pretty amazing - it's called "Not Dead Yet". In the intro to the movie trailer, you can hear him communicate via an eye-motion-triggered voice synthesis/speller computer program.

Phil Keaggy is absolutely world class, as is Monte Montgomery.

A lot of good talent listed here. Some I've never heard of, but enjoyed the videos.

I thought that Randy Rhoades was pretty good too. Zakk Wylde isn't bad either. Maybe not the best, but Pretty Darn good, in my opinion. Seems that I have a thing for Ozzy's guitarists!

Tommy Emmanuel is the first that comes to my mind when I think of who is absolutely the best. I guess that's why Chet Atkins named him Certified Guitar Player.

Jack Bruce was an amazing bass player. I think this threads is about lead guitarist.
