Cigar City Tocabaga Red

Tasting Notes

Pours amber in color with notes of citrus and caramel. Citrus hop bitterness upfront with notes of caramel and an Amish bread sweetness. Citrus hop bitterness returns at the end for a long dry finish.

Moving on....Heavy Seas brought back the Big DIPA

Big DIPA
Uncharted Waters
When we decided to resurrect the Big DIPA, we knew that we needed to make it bigger and better. We’ve brought the beer back with the same 10.5%ABV as before, the same massive amounts of hops as before, but this time, we’ve aged it on oak spirals. Oak spirals suspended in solution allow more surface area to come into contact with the beer increasing the oak presence without increasing exposure time. This results in a smoother oak flavor and further compliments the extraordinary hop characteristics. Cheers!

BEER DETAILS

Style: Double IPA
ABV: 10.5%
IBUs: 75.5
Availability:
Hops: Amarillo, Centennial, Simcoe
Malts: 2-row, Biscuit, Crystal

Decisions, decisions...don't know where to start. Picked a 4 pack of Hoptimum, 4 bombers of Hop Stoopid, a couple Double Daddy's, a couple Sculpin's, a couple Dorado DIPA's, and 4 Enjoy By's. I haven't tried the Enjoy By yet, and I'm also intrigued by the Dorado. I lived in San Diego for several years, so I'm very familiar with Ballast Point brewing...and aside from Scuplin being really good, my impression was always "hmm...not bad". Nothing ever impressed me...but I may have been suckered into buying the Dorado's; because I was realy surprised that they were $9 a piece?? They're either real good ingredients...or I got screwed.

Hoptimum = good stuff

I wasn't impressed with the Dorado ..had it on tap when the Sculpin Habanero was in town which I highly recommend if you get the chance...first pepper infused beer that burns all the way down not just at first sip....freaking awesome

well finished my half of the Big DIPA....not bad...won't go out of my way to buy again but for $5.99 not a bad beer.

i have to say their Loose Cannon IPA and the Black Cannon are still their best beers.

I did try their new White IPA Riptide the other day and while I am not a fan of Witbiers usually and I haven't found a really good white IPA I have to say I rather enjoyed it for a nice light drinkable IPA. It clocks in at 7.25 like the Loose Cannon but it doesn't feel like it.

If you like Witbiers check it out

I highly recommend Speakeasy Double Daddy (DIPA), or even just their Big Daddy IPA if you can find them. All their beers are exceptional IMO...you have to live up to expectations when your website is goodbeer.com

Started with the Dorado DIPA. So far, meh...not impressed, which is what I say to most Ballast Point brews. Definately not worth the $9.
Not even worth posting the picture of it either.

I tried the Dorado DIPA...was dissappointed quite honestly. I know the Sculpin is good, but I haven't really ever been impressed by anything else from Ballast Point.

Starting my night with a Deschutes Inversion IPA. I think the Fraziskaner(sp?) Hefe will be next.
