Default Video of Train Wreck

http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/wor...-of-impact.hln

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (CNN) —The train races into view, and in the space of a heartbeat, the cars derail and crash into a wall of concrete, flipping onto their sides and skidding along the track with terrifying speed and force.
Security footage shows the horror of the moment an express train derailed as it hurtled around a curve in northwestern Spain on Wednesday, killing at least 78 people and injuring 178, local officials said.
Flames burst out of one train car as another car was snapped in half after the crash. Rescue crews and fellow passengers pulled bodies through broken windows and pried open doors as stunned survivors looked on.
Investigations into the cause of the crash continue, but suggestions that the train was traveling too fast appear to be gaining weight.
The train driver is being questioned by police and is under formal investigation, said María Pardo Rios, a spokeswoman for the Galicia regional supreme court. "He is not being charged by a judge at the moment -- it is all at a police level," she said.
Ninety-five of the 178 injured are still hospitalized, the local government's official Twitter account said. Thirty-two adults and four children are in critical condition.
At least 73 people died at the scene and the others at the hospital, Rios said. In Spain, judges typically record deaths that take place outside of hospitals.
Judicial teams are still at the crash site and expect to find more bodies, she told CNN on Thursday morning.
At least five Americans were injured in the crash, a U.S. State Department official said Thursday. The U.S. Embassy in Madrid is trying to determine the exact number. "At this time, we have not received any reports of U.S. citizen deaths," the official said.
Interim charge d'affaires Luis G. Moreno at the embassy said it was in touch "with families of some injured American citizens."

I should think that today's trains have plenty of recording equipment on board to tell the story.

There are so many things to be investigated it's hard to speculate from that brief clip. I note there was a locomotive on each end, and the cars seem relatively light weight construction. As they say it appears to have started at the rear of the lead engine or the front of the first coach. It is possible the engineer applied the engine brake hard and the run-in lifted the relatively lighter coach off, damaging the track in the process. Note that another car near the rear derails at about the same spot as the first one did. Existing track defect? Damage caused by the first derailment? Or maybe something totally different.

That doesn't look like a slow section of track. Wouldn't there be a governor in the power unit to restrict speed? RRman help me out here. Scary image indeed.

I don't know anything about the Spanish railroad system, but most likely the speed is controlled by the engineer, not by anything automatic. In this country they are working on "PTC" - Positive Train Control - which should help reduce collisions between two trains but even that would not override and prevent such an incident as this one.

The last news reports I saw, the engineer said he was going 120 MPH ((where he should have been going 50) and "hoped nobody was killed". Anybody hear an explanation WHY he was going that fast? Was the train allowed that speed earlier in the trip and had not slowed down soon enough, or was this guy just trying to see how fast it would go?

Hard to tell, but it kind of looks like the front of the first car behind the locomotive was the first to leave the tracks.

Anybody could tell from watching the video that it was going way too fast. I know this isn't one, at least I don't believe it is, but there is no way in hell I'd ever get on a high speed train.
