Some pretty cool items, and as you say, some are rather expensive. But it is for charity.

Very little of the money generated actually goes to the charities. UW has a lot of "overhead".....

And they give money to Planned Parenthood, enough said.

Give to the charities you believe in, but screw UW.

There is a lot of stuff I would have bid on if it was going somewhere else than United Way.

BTW United Way is very tight with all the auto companies. We used to get hounded for donations every year, company wide.

I've worked at companies that the requirement was 100% United Way participation, no exceptions. They'd go so far as to take it out of your pay without your consent.

My former employer was VERY big on UW participation, too. They wouldn't go as far as an "automatic deduction", but they did twist the employees' arms a little....

Exactly. When I was in the AF it was donate or else. Then I worked in a couple of high profile companies and the partners went on and on about community involvement. Charity *****. Not to mention the never ending scandals including...

William Aramony, who built the United Way of America into an empire of charitable giving during his 20 years as its president but was jailed in 1995 for defrauding the organization of more than $1 million, died Nov. 11 at his home in Alexandria. He was 84.

They give us the donation sheet every year, and I don't ever turn it in.

One guy at first put 1 cent a month down, they said he couldn't do that, so he went up to 10 cents or $1.20 a year.

They collect money to be distributed among other charities AFTER they take a rake off of around 15%.

Big corporations like them because they don't get nailed by shareholders with " you gave to the Heart Association but not the Kidney Foundation.

Go to work today and there's a new Mustang convertible outside the lobby. Win this with a United Way donation.
