They aren't even called Miata anymore.

MX5 is the designation now and they don't seem to be the "chick" car they used to be.

I hear there are a lot of white VW Rabbit convertibles out there though....

Inexpensive and reliable auto-x car? Miata.

Concerned about MPG? Miata.

Everything else? Corvette.

Most going for maximum horsepower are usually only happy with more power. The Corvette is the choice, not the Miata, unless you are looking for a club race car. but since it sounds like you want a high horse street car, forget the Miata.

I am sorry to say this but whereas they don't have the power of a corvette, put one on the track with lots of turns (Like Sebring Raceway in Sebring FL) and eventually the corvette will lose sight of the Miata. Use to see many spec miatas when I use to run track.

HP is fun but you cant put down too much HP in a turn (even with slicks you will have to feather the throttle in a high HP car and it will take a lot of time to find the perfect feather in each turn for maximum speed through the turn without breaking loose. Meanwhile a Miata goes through a turn like a hot knife goes through butter. Its a more agile car and the HP in a corvette doesn't matter because there are too many turns and the corvette's HP used in the straights wont be able compensate for that time lost to the Miata in all the turns.

People who think sounds crazy are people who have never run on track (roadcourse, not a drag strip). To keep up with the sight of a Miata in a corvette the driver has to be impeccable but in just a 5 lap race my money on a track like Sebring is on the Miata

spec miatas are built as full all out track cars and they aren't too costly. Another good track car is a Lotus elise. I drove a yellow one many many years ago and wow, other than the fact that it had no power steering, that car flew through turns

If I had money to throw away and I tracked twice a month I would definitely get a spec Miata. But if you only track once in awhile I don't know if it would be worth it. As a cool looking street car the Miata would not be my choice.

On an old configuration of the club course years ago, my Corvette with the 427 in it and roughly 550-600 hp ran a best lap of 1:27.

Rule change and with the 302 (not sure, maybe 450 hp) ran a best lap of 1:26. Balance of the car and weight of the car improved even though it had less power.

Now to kill it, I ran a F500 on the same course. For those who don't know, that is a 500 cc powered, 800 lb formula car that maxes out around 120 mph on a good day with a tailwind. My best was 1:17 with it. Ten seconds a lap faster than the 427 with 1/14th of the displacement.

BTW, the lap record at Road America a few years ago was held by a D-Sports Racer, which is a motorcycle powered sports racer.

Don't knock small.

About 8 years ago while working away from home, I ran a few autocrosses with my '98 Z28 just to have some fun. It was an auto, so I was only there for fun. But invariably, I was near the bottom as was the couple of Corvettes and the Z06 due to the PAX killing any chance we had of being competitive. I still had a good time trying to wear down the tires, though, and something to do on a Sunday morning 1000 miles from home.

Plus it was one of the few places I could wail on the car without getting the Blue Light Special, which paid off big when I hit black ice in Georgia.

I'm thinking the OP thought "hmmm... I'll just leave this here" and hit the submit thread button.
