Default Identity theft!

I think I have been compromised. I have had about four credit card applications in the past month put in with my info. Not sure how they got it... I don't guess it really matters now anyway.

I have changed every password I can think of. If it were not for credit monitoring services, I would not even know it is happening. Problem is, I know that it can't be just credit cards. What else should I watch for?

What do I do?

This scares the crap out of me because obviously somebody has got enough of my info to be able to do this. I don't want to become responsible for something that I didn't do

FWIW, I got that notification through Equifax (I think) a few months ago where they asked if you put in the last four of your social security number to check if you might have been compromised. According to them, mine was one of the ones that could have been affected.

+1 on the freeze.

There were some good links in the last big credit thread we had.

Freezing your credit is the answer. The PIA is that every time you use your credit, you will need to speak to the credit bureau.

Not that bad as it can be done online and removed just about instantly for the amount of time you specify. Only PIA is Experian charges $5 (depending on the state you live in ) for it unless you file a fraud report, I still need to do that.

What exactly is a freeze? That would really be a problem. We use our stuff almost daily.

The freeze, when I had to do it, was just for applying for new credit. If you submitted an application for something, you had to verify it was really you.

Just when a hard pull is needed for applying for new credit or maybe if you are moving and renting a new place etc. You can take the freeze off when needed.

I'm no expert, but I think it just means that nobody (including yourself) can open a line of credit without jumping through hoops.

I've thought about doing it for myself and my wife, purely as a preemptive move.

Sounds like a bit of a hassle if you want to buy a car or something, but probably worth it.

When you freeze your account, you are given a password key bu the credit agency to "unlock" your account when needed so creditors can access your credit information.

it prevents unauthorized credit applications to be created in your name, without your approval.

To be clear, a "freeze" won't affect your ability to use your existing credit cards- it will simply stop anyone from opening any new credit accounts without contacting you first.

I use CreditKarma.com as a way to monitor TransUnion and Equifax and look at them weekly- we plan to buy a new house, so we "unlocked" it to let the mortgage lender have access to get a pre-qualification approval letter we can use if we choose to make an offer on another home.

But a freeze shouldn't bother your regular use of your current credit accounts.

I had my identity stolen once. Fortunately they brought it right back when they found out what it was worth.

JS I though it'd be a pain but it's pretty straightforward, you should do this like yesterday.
and also pull your reports to make sure you have no new hard pulls or accounts that you did not do and if you do then dispute them.

Ok, Freezes in place. Thank you for the help, folks.

Now to call the shipping agencies to see about delivery notifications. I'm sure there will be no wait during the "peak" shipping season.

Why you calling. Just go online to each of them and set up delivery notification accounts.
