No I just get frustrated with the feast or famine aspect of this biz (especially trying to find inventory), say **** it, daydream about a real job, then get back to work.

True. People don't realize how much time and effort goes into finding cars. I must say before I knew anything about the car business, I thought most of the used cars at a dealership were trade-ins. Actually that's rare.

Yeah, lately it's been hit or miss which personality you'll get.
I took my chances that today was a light-flow day.

It sounds like you just retired, not like you just became self employed.

If you aren't working 60 to 80 hours a week, and don't have time for the wife & kids, you are not self employed. Don't worry, after 7-10 years of long hours, you can start to coast and sleep till 8:00am.

Some great tips given here. I think you are figuring it out and will up your game to get things working for your business. Main thing is to have a plan and stick to it religiously.....one of the main keys to success. If you decide you need to put in 10 hours each day initially to get your business up and running....then do it with a passion. Good or bad...having your own business is so much more than when you were an employee.....as you are figuring out.
I know you will be successful and get so much more out of it than being an employee for someone else's company!

[QUOTE=J S Machine;1596602318]I'm up for the first time this early in quite a while. Just figured I would check CFOT while drinking morning coffee and getting ready to work out. Realized just how much I miss this place.

Here is a thread I started back in October where I went self employed:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...rts-today.html

I can honestly say that this has been one of the most difficult things I have done. I have spent my entire life working for someone else, so it is harder than I imagined to do things for myself. For those that have never been where I am, you would not realize how hard it is to actually do what needs to be done when you don't have someone telling you what to do. It is kind of like retraining your mind.

Since October, I have handled a lot of projects that I had been thinking about for quite a while. There are also many more on the horizon. Most of them not my work related or profitable in any way

One positive, I started a firefighter workout regimen and have lost almost 30 lbs since 1/1.

The negative to all this though is I seem to have a hard time actually getting out to the shop and spending the day out there working. After getting up and helping the wife get the kids ready for school, I head to the fire station to work out. Some days I don't get back home and get started good until 10-11am. Leave to go pick up the kids from school at 3pm, and the day is pretty much done. I do occasionally go out to the shop and work afterwards, but not often. I've probably had maybe a month of solid days out there actually working and being productive, and of that time I think I might have made less than $500.

I am really fixing to have to commit though, because I have to have ten knives finished for Blade show at Atlanta in the first weekend of June. I have some pieces cut and a few things set out, but they are a LONG way from being finished.

I got up to take the puppy out that my youngest daughter got for Christmas, and could not go back to sleep. I just can't believe it has been almost six months, and I have not accomplished very much

I know that I will get there. Soon, there will be no savings and I have bills to pay. I will make this work, come hell or high water.

[/QUOT

I had a job , quit to work for myself , went back to working . I donít know what you do , but I understand what your going thru . It was better for me to work for a company , economically and mentally. Retired and drive my vette daily .

Once you go from being the only employee to having employees, you get a whole host of new problems and worries. Not the least of which is making sure that you earn enough money for yourself but also enough for your employees.

All those fun things like insurance, accounting and marketing, just get uglier once you begin hiring people. That's only if you manage to hire good employees.
Did it for a while. Really wasn't cutout for it. Wish you luck.

Sorry to hear this. I've been self employed for 18 years, it is not for everyone, but is now the only way I would choose to work.

What is going to happen is that you will somehow take another job, and then wonder for the remainder of your life if you 'could' have made it.

Instead of letting the inevitable happen why not figure out what success would look like and work backwards from there.
  1. If $5000 per month would make it happen (and that is not a lot for a business, but perhaps achievable), figure out how many units you need to make and sell each day to make that happen. If you sell these for $5000 each, of course that means you need to make and sell one a month.
  2. If you sell these for $500 each, you need to make and sell 10 a month, which would work out to about one every two days.
  3. Then determine your time in production and reserve that time each day. If it takes 8 hours to make a $500 product, you should at least spend 4 hours per day in production.
  4. The other half of it is selling. If it takes 15 phone calls to sell one $500 product, you might as well schedule your mornings to make 8 phone calls per day.

Build metrics like the above into your working days and stick to it. You can even schedule your workout as one of the working day metrics, right along side the 8 phonecalls and 4 hours in the shop.
