Default Random conversationalists... Has this happened to you?

I had a dental appointment this morning. I check in at the counter, find an open seat and wait to be called. It was a little crowded so I sat next to an older gentleman. He was already in conversation with another couple waiting to be called. After a couple minutes that couple was called, they get up and head to the back office. The gentleman then turns to me and continues the same conversation he was having with them! He didn't start over, he just kept going like I had been there the whole time. Of course, I was totally bewildered. I wasn't involved in the conversation or even know what they were talking about. I tried not to look too confused and just nodded my head in agreement. He continued talking for another minute and I was actually relieved to be called back.

This has happened to me before. I really don't know what to do when it does. Has this happened to anyone else? How did you handle it?

Respond with non-sequiturs. They'll just think you're crazy and stop trying to interact. This works unless THEY'RE crazy, though.

But the waiting rooms for my NP-C and my dentist hardly ever have very many people waiting. Have never had a conversation with any of them in the last 8-10 years.

Too many people do not know how to interact face to face with others in this computer/cell phone age where texting is the norm. Good for you for listening to the gentleman even if you didnít quite understand what was the jist of the conversation.

ever in the checkout line and the person behind you volunteers their medical history, and all the **** that's wrong with them??? happens about once a month. they aren't talking to anyone in particular, just anyone within earshot. I'm always polite. pay, pick up the groceries and go.

Jen, are you sure you were in the dentist's office? Most of the old farts don't have any teeth. Perhaps OB/GYN?

My buddy used to start up random conversations with people on elevators. We'd travel to the UK and get on an elevator in a bank building on Canary Wharf and he'd be all chatty with the locals.

What he said never made any sense and they would look sideways at him and move away a little bit. He'd laugh and laugh about it afterwards.

I just thought it was weird.
