Default License plate question for the LEOs.

As you may have guessed I live and work in the north Mexican province of Las Vegas, Nevada. In Nevada, front and rear plates are a requirement, however not frequently enforced.

Working in Mexico, a lot of the Mexicans are proud of being from Mexico and still loyal to Mexico. To my point, I noticed this morning as I left work an employee has a truck with a Sinaloa (Mexico) plate on the front and a Nevada plate on the rear. As a LEO, would that give you cause to investigate further? Not saying harass or anything, but if Nevada requires state issued plates, front and rear, and someone is running a plate on the front from a different country, would you do anything?

Fair enough. Just curious.

But to play devil's advocate, would it be frowned upon if I were to mount a New York or Alabama or Korean plate on the front of my car?

Common sense tells me that having a license plate on the front of a car that is not assigned to that car (based on the rear plate) is worse than having no front plate at all, and would probably raise flags with LEO if they notice.

You must live in Henderson or North Las Vegas, my folks used to live in Summerlin and it was a very nice area, no racial issues what-so-ever.

It's not NLV only because it's unincorporated. I work in NLV.

I'd stop that car! Two plates that don't match! Easy reason to stop the car fake registration plate

Sure it does. That's an equipment violation.

Here, front plates aren't required. Consequentially, you often see folks with semi-vanity plates from other countries or provinces on the front

See, that seems like good reasoning to me.

To be fair, I've seen people running around with various European plates and thought the same thing so it's not just a messican thing. There are a lot of people, like Corvette owners, here that just say "f**k it" and don't run any front plate. I did that for a while and I never got harassed. But it just seems like asking for problems by running a different plate.

In NH, not running a front plate is a $150 fine. Front plates are required in NH. I would imagine that if you're running a "foreign" plate on the front, and regular tag on the back, the cops in NH would stop the driver and issue a ticket.

The car owner is inviting a LEO to stop them for reasonable cause, to inform them of the Nevada vehicle Code (and anything else that is exposed during the stop).

Most LEO's have better things to do than educate the public of VC's that are not a public danger, but if you irritate the wrong LEO at the wrong time they can exploit the infraction to their advantage (like when leaving a club or casino at closing time).

He didn't have enough time to steal a second plate - grounds for deportation!

I've been running my Vette without a visible front plate for years and had no problem, even when pulled over for other reasons...

Was pulled over in my Z06 a number of times. The last time, they wrote up a ticket. ::: What was funny about the last couple of stops was, both times, the cop "had to" blow a u-turn on 101, endangering the lives of other motorists, just to chase me down for not running a front tag (it was in the front window ).

When I take out my old car 70 280 se it has the blue california plate on the rear and the german plate(front) it had when it was shipped over. I've never received a ticket. With front and rear plates being mandatory maybe they don't technically have to be the same.

Doing what you can't do is one of the great joys of being a cop.
