they're holding it at $1.6B, but if no one wins, they'll increase it and it should go over $2B

How can they do that, I thought the jack pot is determined by ticket sales. Probably have fine print that says basically they can do what they want, the lottery just another tax on the working man.

The Mega Millions jackpot (and why you are not being told the truth)

The Mega Millions jackpot drawing on Oct. 23 has soared to $1.6 billion...and counting.

In an effort to create jackpots like this one, lottery officials have not only made it harder to win, but have continued to lie to us about the benefits of the lottery.

About half of Americans play the lottery today according to the most recent survey, compared to almost 70 percent in the 1980s. That means the lottery needs to extract more money from fewer people, specifically from the lowest-income households, which spend on average $412 on tickets per year – more than 4 times the amount spent by the highest-income households.

In an effort to draw more people to the lottery, Mega Millions decided to decrease each person’s chance of winning in order to grow the jackpots. As the jackpot gets bigger, more people are willing to buy a ticket.

Before 2017, players picked five numbers between 1 and 75 and then one number between 1 and 15. Now, each player picks five numbers between 1 and 70 and then one number between 1 and 25.

This increases someone’s chance of matching five numbers and receiving some sort of prize, while decreasing the chance of winning the whole shebang.

What’s more, the price of a ticket has doubled.

So, your chance of winning has gone down, but if you lose (and you will), at least your money is going to a good cause – or so you've been told.

In the middle of the 20th century, when lotteries first started in the U.S., they were sold to states as a way to benefit the American public by providing additional funding for education.

This means that as the jackpots get bigger and people spend more money on it – $223 per year by the average American, in fact – there should be more money in state budgets to spend on education.

But that isn’t happening.

Bottom line, the Lottery is nothing more than a STUPID TAX.

Or another way it could be defined is a tax on people who don't understand math. Both of my brothers just refer to it as a sucker bet. When your odds of being struck by lightening and surviving are hundreds of times better than winning, that is a pretty accurate description.

At any rate, I did go out and buy a couple of tickets today. First time in 25 or 30 years. So I have a question, what is the megaplier, how does it work and does it cost more?

I’m usually not a lottery player. But I did buy a handful of numbers today for this one.

Man, if no one wins tonight?! It will DEFINITELY go over 2 billion.

They should update it once more before the drawing tonight though....should be more than 1.6B with all the additional ticket sales today

Someone always eventually wins and they had the same odds as everyone else. Out of all the taxes you could file into being stupid, this one doesn’t seem that bad. You have to be in it to win it. Shockingly, over the years I’ve met several millionaire lotto winners. The odds of that seems higher than winning the actual lottery.

In it to win it is the only reason I bought some today. I hope it doesn't turn into a habit, like smoking crack.

I have known two people, both whom I worked with that hit decent lottery prizes. One guy took his change in lottery tickets at a beer store and won 10 million. Came to work and said good bye to everyone and these days has his own property management business. Still see his name on billboards, that was 25 years ago. The other guy won 5 or 6 million about 10 years back. He vanished. Still work with his brother, but I don't think they get along all that well.

I rarely play, so only for the big jack pots. And consider the money I spend nothing more then entertainment. The money I use is disposable income and not taking money I use to pay the bills and counting on wining to pay the bills.
