Default Job Prospect in Hawaii

I get that this is the epitome of a first world problem, but I have a serious job prospect in Oahu. I've been there before and I love it. Coming from the shitty weather in Illinois to Hawaii alone is worth the price of admission but man, what a lifestyle change. I have no kids or pets, our house is paid off so it can sit for a while if we just rent a condo. My wife doesn't need to work. Sounds like a perfect fit but the pay is at least 20% less. I can store my furniture and just buy when I get there. (They admitted no relocation reimbursement) But I just bought a new car so I'll most likely ship that there. This is absolutely crazy and I have no idea what to do. It almost feels like destiny because we're totally the people this makes both lifestyle and financial sense for.

****.

Hawaii is a fun place to visit, but I could never live there.. I’d get island fever.

It makes lifestyle and financial sense, and you don’t know what to do?

I agree about Oahu being crap & island fever and such, but heck - you should probably try it. What's the worst that can happen, you don't like, quit, and move back to the mainland. No big deal. However the 20% pay cut is problematic as prices in Oahu are outrageous.

We have an opening in Honolulu every few years. I consider that frequency to be ‘high turnover’. There has to be reason. My guess is the pay sucks and living expenses are high.

Do it and don't look back. We would do it in a heart beat if we could.

Maui would be our first pic but we like Oahu as well. Lots of nice areas outside of downtown Honolulu.

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've lived on Oahu for 25 years and love it. I had a very easy "entry" to Hawaii though, I was stationed here for 6 years before getting out and was able to build a support network. Also, I married a local girl that has family here.

Here are a couple of reasons people HATE living here:
- It is expensive to travel back to the mainland to see family. If you have kids, flying back is quite expensive to take the whole family
- It is expensive to live here. Rent is high, food is high, gas is high, parking is high, water service is expensive, electricity is probably most expensive in the US.
- Everyone here is a minority, no matter who you are, you will be a minority. Some people that have never been a minority have issues being a minority.
- Pay is generally very low for equivalent mainland jobs.
- Traffic is bad, one wreck on H1 in the wrong spot can jam up traffic for hours for everyone.

Couple reasons people love it.
- Amazing weather 350 days a year
- Great golf (one thing that is quite affordable)
- Great outdoor activities
- Beaches
- Great diversity of food if you are a foodie
- Great fishing
- Closer to Asia if you travel that way often

Your wife is a physician. They have those in Hawaii. What’s stopping you?

True, true. I guess the biggest problem is what I failed to mention in my initial post. I love my job and boss and work/life balance rice now. If I hated my job I probably wouldn't have posted this.

Yeah, cost of living is like Silicon valley so we'd have to cut back on space, but that's actually ok for us as we don't need the 3400 sq ft. we have. ****, another check box for yes. I'm really trying to talk myself out of this if you guys haven't noticed.

Property taxes are a fraction of what we pay in Illinois. Costco is priced the same as mainland.

No ****! My contact in Honolulu says he pays $900 just in association dues with ocean view, but when I really think about it I pay more than that a month in property taxes and at least your get something for your HOA dues! I get jack **** for my property taxes.

She would have to pay a tail on her insurance $250k and would probably make a 1/4 of her current salary. We will move but not for another 15 years. Stuck in this **** hole until then.

My friends have a $2M home... they pay $2000 a year in property taxes

That would equal to about $40k+ a year in taxes alone

If you're really anxious to try this, I recommend that you keep your current home and rent it out. That way you have something to come back to if you decide you don't like HI. Also, if you do decide to buy a condo in HI, make sure it's one that you can easily rent out to tourists if you do decide to move back to the mainland.
