Default A Question for Whiskey Drinkers

One of the YouTube channels to which I subscribe is the Whiskey Vault channel. Here's an example of one of their videos:

Their Whiskey collection is amazing and they are entertaining to watch, especially towards the end when they've had 7 or 8 glasses.

My question concerns the way they describe the taste of the whiskies they sample. They use colorful phrases like

"Candied maraschino cherry lollipop notes mixed with wood and caramel"
"Light, bright and fresh - almost minty - with a little licorice, honey and not a lot of oakiness"
"This tastes like carrot cake with cream cheese frosting"
"It smells like fresh wheat bread toast with butter"

Be honest - these guys are just making this **** up, aren't they? They don't really taste all these ridiculous things in the whiskey do they? Do whiskey connoisseurs really talk like this?

Whiskey is in the mouth of the beholder. If it tastes good drink it. All those descriptions are bullshit just to make those people seem like they are smarter than you. Although I guess if you have a 'refined' palate then maybe you do taste some of that. I taste stuff and it's either I like it or I don't, my wife tastes stuff and then can come home and replicate it.

They are making fun of wine people. I live in California wine country and some of these people are ridiculous. I go to a wine tasting room, take a drink and say "Tastes like rotten grapes that will get me drunk".

1st I’m not drinking a whiskey that has all those “notes”
gotta be smooth and have a hint of the oak barrel
smellin and tasting all that crap is BS.....they must be trying to draw in the female crowd with all that.
‘Give me Texas Witherspoon or JD and a couple rocks...

I agree

I keep a decent supply of bourbon at home and while I am the first to admit my taste buds are not that good most are pretty similar to me. I always drink neat or on rocks. Blantons is my favorite but Buffalo Trace/Makers Mark/WT all hard to beat at HALF the cost

Beer reviewer guys do the same thing and my current theory is that they are mostly pulling it out of their ***.

I mean significant flavor trends I'm with them but when they throw out a string of five different tropical fruits to emphasize that they taste x kind of fruit flavor... They would have to show me some actual empirical blind taste test data for me to really believe that level of detail at this point.

Come now, when's the last time you had 'just one' drink?

-And 'one drink' doesn't mean a beer stein filled with Wild Turkey.

While Crown is a Whiskey, it is a blend and made in Canada and therefor cannot be a bourbon...….the vid is about Bourbons, which can't be a blend, and also are made within the continental United States, so really slightly an apple/oranges discussion, but admittedly the OP muddled the title to confuse I suppose.

And BTW those guys are drunk

Whiskey and bourbon is amazing Some is smooth, some is sweet, and some can bring the heat Most have oak(duh) flavors with hints of vanilla, honey, smoke flavors among others this is part of my modest collection
