I'd rather have to replace a lost or stolen drivers license than a passport.

Yep.

As of right now, my Missouri drivers license does not meet the "Real ID" specs.
Last I heard (been over a year ago though), Missouri is refusing to comply with the requirements.

I do have a passport though, since we took a trip to Alaska 2 years ago (Flew into Canada, so needed Passport).

But as someone else mentioned, they keep pushing the "enforcement date" for air travel back. Not sure what the status is now.

Real ID pretty much requires the same paperwork you need to get a CDL

Without one you won't be able to get on a military installation either. This could be quite the issue for people who work on base, or need to enter for deliveries, contract work, etc.

Wife and I can board airplanes or enter fed space with our retired military ID cards, so we may not bother with getting the Real ID compliant DL when our current ones expire - may just get the non-compliant version.

Couple were briefly refused a D.C. marriage license when the clerk asked for a ‘New Mexico passport’

And what paperwork is that? I renewed my license last year and didn't have any extra paperwork and it has the "star" indicating it's real ID compliant. Maybe Maryland is a little lax on it. But the star is there.

It all depends on what docs of yours they already have in their system, such as a birth certificate.
Got mine years ago, no big deal, no extra time, no extra money, can't renew online forever anyway.

I didn't need my SSN or two proof of residency documents to get my CDL.

Got mine a few years ago. Not really that big of a deal. Just a couple extra pieces of ID. Don't know how it's really an advantage though. If someone can counterfeit a regular DL, don't know why they couldn't just counterfeit this too.

Did you have to pay the state money to get it? There's your answer.

I don’t know about other states, but here in Kalifornia, there will be a time in the near future, we won’t be able to any firearm without a real ID.

I think it was the same price as a regular renewal.

I have done it, You should do it. You will get a gold star. I've never gotten many gold stars. The star will be on the upper right hand corner of your licence. It will help you when at airports and it is something you will have to do eventually. You should take the trouble and get it done.

I'm in the process of also getting one. Make sure your name on all of your supporting documents is the same. The name in my current drivers license and ss card use my middle initial and my passport spells out my middle name. They had to issue me a temporary drivers license with my middle name spelled out. I have to go to the ss office to get a replacement card. Seems the records at ss have transposed 2 letters in my last name, so now I have to get an original birth certificate to get a replacement ss card. The dmv part was painless, about 40 minutes in and out. I shhudder to think the time I am going to spend in the ss office.
