Default REAL ID. What is it?

I recently received a notice from the DMV that my driver's license is set to expire. They sent me a form to fill out for a new one, but they also ask if I want to be upgraded to a REAL ID. To obtain a REAL ID I must visit the DMV in person and bring additional forms of identification. Passport, Social Security Card, two proofs of residency, birth certificate, and any proof of name change. It appears from the form that this started back in Oct. 2018.

Does anyone know about this "enhanced" driver's license? Is it worth obtaining one?

From what I understand you will need that in the near future at the airport. A standard license won't do anymore.

You'll need a RealID in order to fly, so if you don't have a passport you'll need a RealID driver's license.

Wifie went through the process a couple of months back; as DMV visits go it was relatively painless. Making an appointment helps. Plus there is an online portion which you should do from home before you leave for the DMV; if you don't they'll just make you do it there from a public computer with everyone staring over your shoulder.

You'll have to have one to fly eventually.
They've pushed back the drop-dead date a couple times.

It started years ago, mine already has the gold-star and it was issued in 2015.

In Indiana you can renew online every other time, so one could renew without the Real ID online but the next time when you have to update the photo it's for the Real ID. It's just more documentation of who you are. On the positive side... it's made it difficult for illegals to get fake ID's.

Sounds like I may as well bite the bullet and get it done. Thanks.

edited to add: I already have a passport and Global Entry.

They figured that existing ID isn't quite enough to make sure you are you, so in order to really REALLY verify you are you, you need to bring your other IDs that you used to use, to a designated place, and they'll give you yet another id, who's validity is grounded in id's you already have. So now you only need to counterfeit one id because this one makes up for the other forms, sorta like a whole bunch of Ids wrapped up into one.

Got it?

But it's not necessary to vote.

In MA you can get at a AAA office if you are a member. Review what they need from you and go to an AAA office. Takes 5 minutes if no one is ahead of you.

I don't see the need to get one if I already have a passport. And from what I've read, it's easier to get the passport.

I wouldn't waste time getting a REAL ID. You can still get on a plane using a passport. And in 10 years time, the airline industry will cease to exist.

I had to bring in the same stuff when I renewed CDL. First I had to do that.

They keep threatening to make it required to board a plane, but the date is continously pushed back. I've had one for 5 years, since they threatened to make it required in AL 5 years ago.

Must not be from NJ, where we have to prove who we are to get a license, but we give them out to illegals.

That's pretty ironic.

I've got a real ID compliant license and didn't need any additional information for MD DMV.

I got mine a couple months ago. Had to make an appointment on line at the DMV, took a couple forms of ID. Mandatory here by Oct. 2020 for flying or gaining access to Federal buildings. Passport is acceptable, but who wants to take their passport with them for domestic flights?

You'd be surprised by how many people use their passports for domestic flights.
