900-Pound Safe Falls On Suspected Robber, Killing him.

A suspected burglar was found crushed to death under a 900-pound safe in an Indiana house Tuesday.
According to the local authorities, the house owner George Hollingsworth called them Tuesday and said his garage was broken into. He told the police the door frame was damaged, and the garage was in such a state of mess that he wasn’t sure what was missing. However, on Wednesday, while he was attempting to clean the garage, he found a body underneath a 900-pound antique floor safe that had fallen over.

“I came in and told my wife, ‘I think we’ve got a dead body out there.’ She thought I was kidding,” Hollingsworth said before. His wife called 911 immediately. An emergency officer reached the scene. He went inside and called “Buddy. Hey buddy,” as Hollingsworth tried to tell him the man was dead, WXIN, the local TV station reported.

“My mind couldn’t comprehend it. I would have rather seen him steal stuff and get out than die like that. What a horrible way to die,” Hollingsworth said.
was issued by the Marion Police Department, which said the burglar was 28-year-old Jeremiah A. Disney. The autopsy was conducted Thursday and the investigation was ongoing.
Marion Fire Department helped Hollingsworth and the police in lifting the safe so the body could be removed. Police did not release details about how the safe fell on Disney or when the incident occurred.

What I wonder is how did the guy get the safe to fall on him? A friend of mine has an 1100 pound safe, and I doubt I could move it an inch without some sort of hydraulic assistance. I'm pretty sure I could run full tilt into it and it wouldn't budge.

I agree. If it’s sitting upright flat on the floor he would somehow have to lift 450 lbs. just to start tipping it if he even intended to tip it over?

I guess y'all missed the part in the report saying the safe was suspended (huh?) from a floor jack.

Suspending a 900 lb. safe on a floor jack is almost as stupid as a burglar being squashed by it!

Yeah, I'm guessing they meant supported, not suspended. But there was a floor jack involved somehow. But wht would you think you could make off with something that big anyway? I think Disney was Goofy.

Maybe it was like some sort of elaborate mousetrap for burglars?
