I always figured they were expensive new because everyone wants to tell thier friends how much they paid. Then reality sets in and without the huge cost to brag about, nobody wants em.

Because they suck and cost to much to repair when the warranty runs out.

All this being said however, I have two old school MB, a 1979 450 SL that is easy to work on and is actually appreciating from when I bought it and an '87 560 SEL, again pretty simple to work on and both are built like panzer tanks but that was then.

This!
00-02 E series are pretty damn reliable. They have a few engineering hiccups (conductor plate in trans) but overall pretty solid.
Youll need to know somoene to do repairs (who is here on the forum and mobile) otherwise sit down when it comes time to fix it
You can get a mint lower mi example for a couple grand. Get one from a long time owner whohas everything done at the dealer, they are out there.

Even the older ones cost a mint to fix many parts are dealer only...one thing they have going for them is they start every time and keep going.
Cant buy a scanner from the auto pts store. If you get one I got a guy who can keep it going for not much $
I dont like them but a solid e320 will start every time

There is a huge difference between your 87 SL (the last real MB) and what they sell now. When you drive one of those old MBs you can picture an old German machinist with a green visor and leather apron bolting the car together by hand. Just closing a door or the trunk on one of those tells you all you need to know about how sturdy they are.

Some might say the "green visor" thing ended in 73.

All these decades, I have NEVER owned any European car......and only a very few Japanese cars.....

Now in the Wash DC region, the amount of American brands on the roads amount to less than 10% of the cars.....

I had a 2015 SL400 and loved it. Wonderful car. Glad I leased it. Got a killer deal on the car and the lease terms, due to corporate discounts. The residual was much higher than market value, so it was a turn-in from the word go. But also, someone hit it. So I was really glad it was a lease. Dropped the keys, said thanks and that was that.

Why do they drop like a rock?

Lot of reasons. Mostly though, it's a "prestige" vehicle. Not a lot of prestige in a used prestige vehicle. Most people who want one can't afford one, and no one wants they ones they can afford.

They usually get leased new, then sold as CPO at 2-3 years old. Lots of low mile used ones on the market, which drives down the prices of ones that aren't as nice.

But yeah, the other thing is they can cost a bundle to fix and most people don't want to deal with it.
