I called.

They will not change the coding. It is their policy. They further informed me that the only out of network insurer they constantly have trouble with is Aetna.

Surprise, surprise ...

Probably depends on the plan more than anything. We had Aetna when my wife and 2 kids spent 3 months in the hospital/NICU, plus my wife had surgery earlier that year with a hospital stay for a few days that time. I'm sure that Aetna paid hundreds of thousands for all of that, easily. The only hiccup was an ambulance bill for about $12k for my kids to ride from the NICU at Stanford to our local hospital. We had confirmed that it would be covered beforehand and told them that. They looked into it and that was that.

Had to do the same here.

billing technicality

Back when I used to have medical insurance (for my kids) the only technicality involved was the insurance company not paying. It's as the guy you talked to said, the doctors come after you, not them. That is why they won't pay. The guy you talked to isn't lying. Hard to believe he told you the truth though. Even harder to believe they're still scamming people this way since I ceased interaction with them some 30 years ago.
