Well I didn't do that, but definitely learned my lesson. Nothing but cabs or lyft since.

I got mine right before Uber/Lyft became a normal thing... nowadays nobody has an excuse. Mine was silly... I'm 270, had 4-5 beers, blew a 0.09 (0.08 legal limit). That was that... first offense doesn't matter in VA as there are mandatory minimums of a $2K fine (or maybe $2,500), 6-months interlock, restricted license, and ASAP class.

My insanely alcoholic step brother had one for a while.

Blow to start, then random blows while driving.

One morning after guy's poker night, he got up and went to start his car- no dice. Had to wait it out for a couple hours till his BAC dropped low enough to get the car started.

Side note: he didn't learn a thing. Facing his 4th DUI currently, charged as a felony. He may lose it all over this one, great career, high paying job, everything. Facing a minimum of 90 days lockup, no work release. Prob makes 200k a year or so.

Blow, suck, then hum into the device to start the car. 5 minutes later, gotta repeat the process. After that it's random between 15-60 minutes. You get 5 minutes to do the randoms or your car will go into shut down mode and you have have to get it towed to the place it was installed to get it unlocked. Oh, and they install a camera system to make sure you don't have somebody else blow into the device. It's uses a suction cup and falls off easily when the temps are high. "Not my fault you use **** like this that won't stay on. My job is to use it and not set offf the breathalyser. Yours is to install and maintain the damn thing."

Blow hot and you get a warning. Do it twice within (I think) an hour and it locks your car up. You then have to pay to get the device reset and most likely another month tagged onto how long you need to keep the device. Pizza, gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, and certain breads can register as alcohol. I came close twice because of the toothpaste.

Cost was $100.00 to install and then $120/mo to monitor.

Same as my buddy had in Canukistan 15 years ago, except no camera.
He was a HD diesel mechanic, fuel and oil fumes on his skin or clothing would read the same as him having booze on his breath. THAT was a PITA.

My Brother and Nephew had it in Illinois

$250 to install and $150 a month. As somebody said miss one and car locks and its $300 to unlock it. Miss a second time back in front of the judge car does not unlock unless judge says so.

Cant have others blow into it. Do a fake blow and it's an automatic loss of driving and possibly off to jail.

Both had to do it for a year.

Also if you break or damage the device i think the cost was $1000 to replace it plus the $250 to install it.

I had to drive my brother to court till he got his. Learned his lesson. As for my nephew...on his second one. Cant learn a lesson.

But just cause you haven't doesn't mean other older people won't get them or got them. They're also stricter these days as compared to the past.

I did learn my lesson, though. Once I realized alcohol impaired not only my ability to drive safely (which I already knew), I realized it had the effect on me of not being able to judge whether or not I was impaired.

So I had to quit the booze. Probably one of the best lessons I have ever learned. Just wish it didn't have to be so painful. DUI really sucks.
