Recently? You're lucky, it's ridiculously popular here in the NE, sold out everywhere.

It is everywhere here. I think even Kroger carries it.

Decided I'd like to try a Japanese Whiskey. Saw this at Costco today. Decent beginner choice?

The best whiskey is when someone else is buying.

It is not bad.

It is about 80 percent of Hibiki for 50 percent of the price and you can actually find it.

We have it, we use it for mixing.

Most of the good Japanese whiskey is - gone.

We used to drink it 10 or more years ago. Yamazaki 12 and 18 are really great malt whiskeys, though a lot smoother and gentler than their scotch cousins.

But it got popular and honestly, they didn't make much of it 10-20 years ago. Popularity drove it to being all consumed and what's left is overpriced.

Yamazaki 18 year old is a quality whiskey, but NFW I'd pay $700 a bottle for it.

There are no rules as to what can be called, "Japanese Whiskey". Legally, it doesn't even have to be from Japan!!! There's a lot of stuff hitting the market now, rice whiskey, grain whiskey and a lot of inferior examples of malt whiskey from Japan, even aged whiskeys. Much of which, is inferior and not worth the $50-$70 it seems to command anymore. Some is pretty good, but far better with a small splash of water or soda in it. The primo stuff is all gone.

Want something really good and not crazy? Whistle Pig Old World Rye. It's at Costco for as little as $99 now. It's great stuff.

I saw Whistle Pig 10-year-old rye whiskey at Costco yesterday for $70. Good stuff?
