When I was in college, back in the mid-70's, my fraternity had a beer machine - an old 7-up can machine that had been forgotten-about, and "re-purposed".

This being the mid 70's, our beer tastes were not developed, and so we had a column of Bud, a column of Pabst Blue Ribbon (ironically, somewhat trendy now....), and a column of Miller High Life ("the champagne of modern beers", MGD not yet existing). The fourth column was "pot luck". Four out of five beers in it were super-cheap, such as Busch (back then it was Bud's budget brand), "Red, White, and Blue" (Pabst's cheap brand), Schlitz, Old Milwaukee, Blatz, etc. But every 5th beer was our idea (back then) of a "premium beer" - Michelob! (In the gold cans.) Beers cost a quarter, and if you felt lucky, you shot for a Mich....

We actually had an elected position in the house to keep the beer machine stocked, etc. - VP-BMO (Vice President - Beer Machine Operations). It was a hotly-contested position....

But my own mother out-cheaped the beer machine. I remember coming home for break, and she had decided to do me a favor and stock the fridge with some beer. She did what she always did when shopping. She bought the cheapest product that was on sale. In this situation, a case of "Alpine" beer, at $2.69 a case..... Yikes!

I still thanked her profusely, for having cold ones already there.

Actually, that Alpine beer wasn't bad, being from a small brewery in Wisconsin. Probably the worst beer I recall from the 1970's was "Olympia Gold", a light beer that overdid it in terms of being low-calorie. It didn't taste bad, it just tasted like water. I think it was only 70 calories a can - they were probably just diluting regular Olympia beer.

At this point, I pretty much only want to drink well-made craft beers, with IPAs or "pale ales" being my usual choice.

Years ago we had a beer strike & we were in the states & bought some Billy Beer. That stuff was so nasty nobody wanted to drink it in a beer drinking crowd, took a case to a party & took it home after. Finally strike was ended & we got our good beer back ended throwing the Billy Beer away. Terrible ****.

I'm not a big fan of sours and have to think a dark sour would be exceptionally not my thing either... I never would have taken that one off the shelf in the first place.

I love 90 minute though. 60 minute ok for me.
In terms of good American beer you can get almost anywhere I do think 90 minute is one of the best.

Of course German beers aren't going to taste like an American west coast IPA; completely different styles.

It ain't super, it ain't premium, and you could argue it ain't beer.
