Default "Recuperative Car Plan" - Insurance question

Does anyone have any experience with these, or work in the industry and know these policies? My credit union sent me an offer for this plan, $25 a month (single). They tout it is payable to me up to $500/day for all sickness / hospital recuperation and injury recuperation, for a maximum of $182,500 annually. Pre-existing is covered.

I don't normally spend much time in the hospital but sometime in the next 1-2 years I may need to have a surgery that could have me out for up to 8 weeks plus lots of rehab time. I'm single and therefor the sole income earner. We do have STD and LTD at my job but of course it pays much less than my salary which is +6 figures so an extended absence could get expensive.

Are these plans worth anything? Or is it just another insurance scam? Do these plans typically require someone to exhaust their vacation, STD and LTD before they pay a dime? What's the catch?

I don't see a need for it, if you already have STD & LTD. Any STD plan I had when I was still working paid my full salary up to 6 months, and after that it switched to LTD that paid 60% indefinitely. And your right, there will be a lot of fine print on that policy you are looking at. They don't sell those plans to lose money. I'd skip it.

Thanks, kind of my thought too. I need to really look at what's in my STD/LTD policy. One thing I am pretty sure of is we need to burn all of our vacation first which sucks. Full salary for 6 months would be fine, I don't foresee myself ever needing more than 2 months. But 60% pay would be
