What does GMC stand for? DUMB QUESTION
My friend and I are arguing of what GMC stands. He thought it stood for General Motors Canada. I said General Motors Commercial. We tried to Google it and could not come up with anything. Are we both wrong? Or could it be General Motors Corp.

However...I once read in Motor Week Magazine that GMC trucks does not stand for General Motors Corporation; rather the name of the truck company that the "general" bought. Can't remember what company that was. Something like George Morgan Company. Any help with this??

According Automobile Quarterly's General Motors: The First 75 Years, published in 1983, General Motors acquired two independent truck companies, the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company (1908) and the Reliance Motor Company (1909) and then consolidated them into the General Motors Truck Company in 1911.
In 1943, GMC Truck and Coach Division came into being.
Most people seem to think GMC stands for General Motors Company. The only problem with that is GM itself won't say if that's correct or not.
PS -- Max and Morris Grabowsky built their first truck in 1900. In 1902, they organized the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and began production to build one-ton trucks. This company was the beginning of GMC Trucks. (And some think GMC stands for Grabowsky Motor Company, but it may be just a legend.)

Please read I was drunk not doped up. With further looking into it I found that there really is no true answer to it. Remember General Motors Corporation was long before GMC. From my understanding it looks like GM purchased another company with the initial GMC and it was just a coincedence. They just adopted it with no real revised meaning. It's a tuff question that I don't think can be answered.
