IMO a MUCH more valuable comparison between the GT500 and the C6 would be to compare the stang to the BASE C6. Why? The fact is that most published results indicate that the Z51 is .1 seconds faster in the quarter mile at the same speed for the manual and identical for the automatic ( no gearing difference ).

My point is NOT to start a discussion about the Z51 per se. Rather, simply to point out the the GT500 could beat the BASE C6 in a straight line only by a tiny margin in ET and final speed. Comparing the Mustang to the base C6 instead of the Z51 really brings home the point , IMO, that the Mustang with its 500 hp is a dog by comparison.

In fact, IMO the base C6 and the GT 500 are so close that driver skill alone could mean the difference in who won a quarter mile race at the track. Yes, the Z51 is perhaps a tiny touch faster than the base manual C6 but a guy doesn't even need that option to run nearly neck and neck with the so called mightly GT500.

Now, add Z51 or add Z06 and the stang looks even worse. If the '08 base C6 were to get a hp bump of 35 to 50 hp as is rumored IMO it would beat the GT500.

IMO the stang is boxy, unattractive, sits too high, and has to have all that hp just to motivate its almost SUV like weight. Heck, my Grand Cherokee Hemi is only a couple of hundred pounds heavier that the Mustang.

just my opinions and the purpose of this post was not to demean the wonderful outstanding almost supernatural Z51 option.

I promise.

ps. If you supercharged a 'Z51' you'd get almost exactly the same as if you sc'ed a base C6. Same engine. I know it hurts but it's true.
And your point is??????

Enough tq. to trap 125+ with his 4000 pound pig.

I guess he'll just have to throw the Kenne-Bell 2.8 on there and blow right into the 700+ rwhp/600+ rwtq range.

There is no doubt a modded GT500 could beat a stock C6..

However, these people forget the Vette guys can mod as well.. It may cost more money, but you will find a ton of Vette guys out there willing and able to run a modded Mustang... I trap 123+ now with a baby head and cam package... He gets a pulley, I get a bottle... Does it ever end?

A few more psi would likely net 600rwhp on the stock blower.

He went from 482rwhp to 550rwhp by going from 9-13 psi, I figure 16 psi would get it done.

Nobody's forgetting that. Some of us "Mustang Guys" have lots of friends with fast Vettes.

The guys with the deepest pockets usually go the fastest and NO, it never ends.

P.S. - When I lived in NJ, Julio (Cartek) occasionally worked on my GN. Obviously people on this site know Cartek.........I'm very familiar with superfast street Vettes.

yes, 16psi then BOOM.....maybe some sucker service department will repair it under warranty, but don't bet on it.

What's with all the negativity.

I figure if my 04 Motor can live at 20 psi, the Shelby can live at 16 psi. Only time will tell I guess. I figure it's at least as reliable as a stock shortblock LS2 at that power level.

For Sure... I had an 03Cobra that trapped 119ish - I thought it was pretty quick. I was spanked by many mild head and cam Vettes here in the DFW/Dallas area... I now drive a Vette (call me a quick study)...

20 psi / 16 psi for shelby on pump gas & stock compression? i am sure your tune helps by pulling the timing down, but it is still on borrow time unless you never get on it on pump gas. good luck to you.

BTW, there's a video on this site of a GT500 tracking a C5 Z06 at a road course. While there is some debate as to the relative driver ability and mods on the two cars, it's clear the GT500 wasn't flying off the track.
While this is getting kind of a redundant topic, let me re-post my respose on the GT500/Vette which you (I think) completely agreed on.

Truth is ford made a major F-up in the weight and design of the car. It's not cheap, it has a great motor, but it is - as a TRUE sports car goes - a PIG. I am not a 1/4 guy guy, so I won't argue a 1/10 from this guy and that. I will, without a doubt, tell you a base C6 will beat your base stang, cobra, GT500 on a road course anyday. I am not a great track driver, but the mustangs always make me feel good about my vettes handeling/performance ability. That's not a slam, but the truth, they are not on par with a vette on all-around performance. I put a greater emphysis on track, and not strip performance, but that's me. I think the GT500 is a very nice car, but it's over-weight, over-priced, and I feel ford missed the boat this go around as far as the GT500. To compare it to the C6/Zo6 is simply silly. Just my opinion based on personal, and, if possible unbiased opinion.

YOUR RESPONSE

You're pretty much right on the money.

I will say this:

- I do think that it's not overpriced at it's ~$43,000 sticker price (yes, they will sell for sticker eventually).
- They are way overweight (Ford REALLY missed the boat on this aspect)
- Nobody I know of ever compares it to a C6 Z06

Yep. We're on the same page.

Just a little frustrating that people take my posting of information on the GT500 (or the 03/04 Cobras for that matter) as somehow being a slam on the Vette?????

Yes, obviously a good tune is critical to long life and I agree timing plays a key part. A splash of 100 octane for track days doesn't hurt either.

I've got 72,000 on my motor, so the conservative approach to my tune has worked so far. I'm actually surprised it's lived as long as it has at my power level.

*knock's wood*
